"Appalachia", the central and southern Appalachian Mountains of the United States, also including the Allegheny and Cumberland Plateaus. The Appalachian Mountains (French: les Appalaches) are a vast system of North American mountains, partly in Canada, but mostly in the United States, forming a zone, from 100 to 300 miles wide, running from the island of Newfoundland some 1,500 miles south-westward to central Alabama in the United States (with foothills in northeastern Mississippi), although the northernmost mainland portion ends at the Gaspé Peninsula of Quebec. The system is divided into a series of ranges, with the individual mountains averaging around 3,000 ft (900 m). The highest of the group is Mt. Mitchell in North Carolina (6,684 ft or 2,037m), which is the highest point in the United States east of the Mississippi River as well as the highest point in eastern North America.

The term Appalachia is used to refer to different regions associated with the mountain range. Most broadly, it refers to the entire mountain range with its surrounding hills and the dissected plateau region. However, the term is often used more restrictively to refer to regions in the central and southern Appalachian Mountains, usually including areas in the states of Kentucky, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, and North Carolina, and sometimes extending as far south as northern Georgia and western South Carolina, as far north as Pennsylvania, and as far west as southeastern Ohio.

Hey Ned,

I was hiking in the Appalaches in the fall about 8 years ago (in the West Virginia part). But w/o a cam. So, this is very welcome. Just the way I remember the scenary. Great perspective down the valley and good detail in trees. I think I see the idea of using the branches as both foreground and a sort of upper frame. But I'm not sure this aspect of the pic is entirely successful. Perhaps, the branches take up too little space in order to really work in this manner. But the view is unbeatable.

Cheers,
Mikkel

Hello Ned,

A nice view and composition. The branch gives the picture a caracter and tells that you were beside or under a great tree.

Regards,
Huseyin

nice colors and a good view. the branch with the leaves in the upper left is nice.

Living in the barrens west of the appalachins I appriciate this photo. Although a little bright and a little blue this photo is well composed and sharp.

Hey, Ned. This is another one. I saw the thumbnail and thought, "Wow, that looks like home." You're good. I like that vee you got with mountains coming in from both sides. The branches in the foreground lend a nice frame. Kinda makes me homesick, except it's only in the teens up there... LOL Nice shot!! TFS, Shelly

Very nice fall colors! Nice inclusion of the branches and the colored leaves. A place you dream about! TFS.

Nick

Hello Nmess, long time no see.
Gorgeous picture. That's what I want to see, on my next trip to the States, this fall : the mountains of "the Last of the Mohicans, but I thought it was also the Shenandoa Valley, where Mosby had a few happy trails.
Could you tell me if there is a difference between the Appalachians, the Shenandoah Valley and the Blue Ridge Mountains?. I want the green round hills covered with forests, and fog at the bottom, to drive around.
Thank you beaucoup,
langaloo
