Photographer’s Note

Poised atop a hill, amidst thousands of war graves at Arlington National Cemetery, from the generous grounds of the house of Robert E Lee, you can catch a glimpse of this view, which John F. Kennedy said is "so beautiful, one could stay forever".

Once you have spent even just a few moments here, you have to agree with him....

Though the general's grave in the foreground is the focus of the picture, the eye is drawn away down to the endless fields of white crosses, across the Potomac River and down the National Mall to the Washington Monument and the US Capitol in the distance! It was a moment to savour and remember, and I hope this picture does it justice.
