Photographer’s Note

At the end of another long day at the tall building, I shuffle home with my briefcase laden with papers that I must scrutinize before daybreak. There are other tired folks on the street. It is dark already. That is the problem with winter. I walk slowly, measuring my steps, keeping myself apart from the other pedestrians. Indifferent cars pass us by. I walk around the construction sites, wait for the green walk sign at almost every crossing. It is warm, unseasonably so. As I shuffle on, a tall girl skirts around us in long easy strides, her t-shirt clinging to her sweaty back, and quickly vanishes in the darkness ahead. I press the shutter instinctively, the camera in my palm, my thumb on the shutter button. I don't know why I press the shutter. I am left with the vision of a gazelle gracefully bounding over inconsequential bushes in a dangerous terrain.
