March 2nd Snowfall

What a difference a few hours make! Just when we thought we would not see any snow this winter season, last night we had a beautiful snowfall in the Northern Virginia, Washington DC metropolitan area. When I looked out of my window this morning, I beheld a glorious sight. The ground was blanketed with snow. Evergreen branches were bent under the weight of the snow. Yard furniture appeared to have thick white cushions. Large flakes were continuing to fall rapidly sometimes flying horizontally rather than vertically. It looked like a live Currier and Ives painting. There were only a handful of cars on the main street. The Federal Government in Washington D.C. opened two hours late and most schools in the area were closed. By 10 AM, the snow stopped falling and by 11 AM the sun was shining through the clouds. It was joyously delightful while it lasted.

My photo shows you two ornamental trees recently planted in my neighborhood. Their trunks and branches are so bright they appear to be painted, but they are natural. I admired their vibrant foliage in the fall and now the bare red branches are especially striking in the snow.
