Photographer’s Note

Elvis Presley was first interred at a local cemetery but was later moved to his mansion Graceland. Reportedly his burial began with a long procession to the cemetery; he was carried in a white hearse followed by 17 white limousines, ending at Forest Hill Cemetery. His copper coffin weighed 900 pounds. A small service was held in the mausoleum. Elvis's father Vernon was the last to pay his respects. He was buried in a white suit and a blue shirt, along with his TCB logo ring brought by his father Vernon and a metal bracelet from his daughter Lisa Marie. He was later moved to the mansion after a failed break-in by grave robbers in Oct., 1977. He was then buried in the Meditation Garden next to the swimming pool at Graceland (2764 Elvis Presley Blvd). Various other relatives are now interred in the Memorial Garden, including his mother and father, grandmother. A plaque also commemorates the death of his infant twin brother; few people know that Elvis was a twin and that the other baby was stillborn. Elvis was born in a simple shot-gun house in Tupelo, Mississippi on January 8, 1935 at the precise time of 4:35 AM. Half an hour earlier, his twin brother was born. Jesse Garon was stillborn. Gladys and Vernon were naturally heartbroken. Jesse was placed in a coffin (some sources say he was placed in a shoebox) and buried in the evening on an unmarked spot in the local churchyard. The Presleys never had any more children.
