Photographer’s Note
This is John Lee Hooker, Jr. - son of the great bluesman John Lee Hooker.
So often nowadays we are seeing the children and even grandchildren of great musicians of earlier times - many times they are just as or even more successful with their own careers as their parents. Bonnie Raitt, Julian Lennon, Jakob Dylan are some of the more prominent, I think Bonnie is probably the most successful of the three, but they all had big shoes to fill.
I don't know if this guy will be as successful as his father, somehow I doubt it. His style is much different, of course - I didn't see him touch a guitar and he certainly never sat down. He is quite a flamboyant entertainer an very emotive singer and dancer. He did do "Dimples", one of his father's greatest hits, or at least most covered songs.
It would have to be really hard to step onto the stage with that name, though. I don't know what I expected - I had never seen him perform before, in fact, I didn't know he existed (some blues aficionado, huh?).
I think he would have been better backed by one of those "big band" sort of groups, lots of horns and spotlight right on him. His band was good, they certainly played well and are likely excellent entertainers in their own rights, but this guy takes up the whole stage.
He was good, but he wasn't his father, which somehow was a bit disappointing to me.
I still got some good shots, though. I was able to get fairly close to most of the performances at the Beale St. Music Festival. Like Elvis Costello did in an earlier performance, John Lee mugged for all the cameras pointing at him. I liked his hat, gold lined teeth and shiny vest - he is a great subject for Monday Blues.
Hope you all have a great week!

Hi Reed
It sounds like John Jr has some really big shoes to fill! :)
I really like this portrait. The blue background appears perfect for accentuating the performer, whose details are so well captured he looks almost "3D". Amazing to see the details on his vest.
TFS.

I know his father very well. Don't know any songs by Junior.
Fine portrait, nevertheless.

Hi Reed, wow, this is history you're shooting, son of the great man. As you say, he has big shoes to fill and I don't think I want him to be replicating his Dad. Anyways, it's a great shot. I like the placement within the frame, the sharpness is excellent (that nice lens has been put to good use) and I love the blue contrasting BG. Nice frame too. TFS, Lisa.

As long as blues has nothing to do with the blue - it will be the blues in photography.
If there is a blue attached to the blues - the blues is no longer the blues in photography.
In other words: The blues ( as the name says it- - has to be all dressed in white and black...
Then, and only then - the blues is whispering it's name into my ear.
..........
Dear Reed...
The blue color is the most treacherous, surprisingly cruel and baastardly damaging color in color photography.
Think twice before you use it, and then ( and only then) go ahead and think about it for the third time !
In the meantime...Cool is that J.L.H Jr. dude...
And, if he is only a half -as-good as his pops...?

Le fils de John Lee Hooker! j'espère qu'il a hérité du talent de son père! Très belle photo prise exactement au bon moment pour que le micro ne cache pas le visage très joliment éclairé. Très beau fond bleu nuit.
Amicalement

Hi Reed,
Your series of muscian is pretty good and i like to see them. When i read Jr i expect a young guy but it seems Jr is also on respectable age ;-) Of course he is not like his dad, that's impossible, there was only one Johhny Lee.
Anyway, the way how you captured this in blue with superb details on his clothings is great work on the exposure. These images are not that simple to make but you did a great job here...excellent..!!!
Regards,
Henk
