Photographer’s Note

This was taken at Lookout Mountain, Tennessee, near Chattanooga. The Incline Railway is a trolley that carries passengers between the bottom of the mountain and the top, a distance traveled of about a mile. Near the top the angle is over 72 degrees from horizontal. It's so steep that the trolly car is built on a slant and the seats are tilted backward so passengers aren't pitched forward during the ride. In the upper right of the photo you can make out the bottom of the railway, cutting its way through the trees.

The Incline Railway has a long history ferrying passengers up and down the mountain. The first Incline was built in 1886 and took passengers to a first class hotel atop the mountain, overlooking Chattanooga and the Tennessee River. The Incline has since been rebuilt and boasts itself as the world's steepest passenger incline. More details and historic photos can be seen at this website: http://www.lookoutmtnattractions.com/
