The Russell House was listed on the National Register of Historic places in 1988. A self sufficent farmstead in the 1800s and stagecoach inn(halfway house) for travelers between Walhalla,SC and Highlands,NC. In an extremely remote mountain community, the Russells served not only as farmers and innkeepers but also doctors, blacksmiths and coffin makers.
Unfortunately, the last built home on the site (1967) has since burned but some of the other buildings still remain.
This is the "front view" of the spring house. Used to keep milk, butter, ect cool. The cold mountain spring runs through the building and through the property into the Chattooga River. That water is freezing today. I can only imagine how cold it was back then!
**Sharpened and slightly cropped. |

hello Laura
Very nice documentary piece on this history. Nicely composed shot. Looks like quite near to road, just above the roof tip?
Good of you to share this one, bill
