Photographer’s Note
This spring I have put out bird feeders, sunflower seeds, and even made my own suet cakes to attract birds. My main wish was to attract bluebirds and wouldn't you know?? I have seen ONE since I put out all the stuff. BUT - I had no idea that in the midst of suburbia would I see a woodpecker. It was SO cool. It looks to be a young one and it's very skittish, so I am thrilled when I see it. I did a bit of blurring of the BG because it was kind of hard to see clearly, but those are the colors I got from my camera. Hope you enjoy it.

Hi dearest Shelly
Wonderfull bird, great colours.
Of course with a 300 or 400 mm lens it's possible to have easilly a blurr background with a short DOF
You have done a good job.

Well done Shelly
You have captured amazing detail in this little guy. We have a few around us too but you are right they don't stay in one place long. Excellent catchlight in his eye.

Hello Shelly,
Mr Woodpecker really looks good today!
The shining red cap is a sure eye-catcher, and the plumage is reproduced with great details...
DoF seems spot on isolating the subject well from the background, and the composition is well balanced!
Greetings,
Pablo -

Hi Shelly,
Great closeup of this handsome dude who is seen in brilliant plumage and sitting on a perch that contrast strikingly with his strong colors.
Love the muted sylvan backdrop.
These guys make such a racket not only from their pecking but also they have a unique cry.
Regards, Tom

Spectacular close-up image of the woodpecker. The definition in the tree's bark matches the definition in the bird's feathers. Congratulations, Shelley. You have created an image that John Audobon would have been impressed by.
Warm regards,
Bulent

Hello Shelly, I missed seeing this first time around;I cannot believe how bright the feathers are on its head!
I would be very pleased at seing this on my bird table, even if the intention was to see bluebirds.
Good sharp focus on the woodpecker.
Tfs, regards Jean.

Hello Shelly!
This is a great portrait with impressive colors. You were lucky to rub up against the woodpecker! There was a need for it, to rest for a while! Through your photo we all admire this beautiful bird. The blurred background is excellent, so we centre on the bird.
Kind regards,
Athanasios.
