Photographer’s Note

A "Banker Horse" of the Shackleford Banks, North Carolina. These horses are the oldest documented population of wild horses in the United States. They are said to have swam ashore during shipwrecks in the 16th century. The island they survive on is nine miles long and less than a mile wide, and is subjected to hurricanes, drought, and disease.
