Photographer’s Note

In the latter part of the Nineteenth Century Thomas Edison was brought to Charlotte to help install new trolley lines. By 1891 electric streetcar service began to the Dilworth suburbs. This reliable and affordable transportation option allowed Dilworth to flourish as Charlotte's first suburb. Other neighborhoods developed quickly, and service was extended to some of today's most prominent Charlotte neighborhoods, including Elizabeth, Myers Park, Plaza-Midwood, Wesley Heights and Biddleville.

Advances in technology rendered Charlotte's electric streetcar system obsolete, and motor buses soon became the rage. Now after a 65 year absence, the trolley has been brought back to the streets of Charlotte and can be seen running from the South End corridor to the Uptown streets.
