Photographer’s Note
The USS Cairo, ironclad river gunboat, was sunk by the Southern Army in 1862. It was retrieved from the Yazoo River bottom a hundred years later and is on display at the Vicksburg National Battlefield. It was the first ship ever sunk by an electrically detonated mine.
