Photographer’s Note
A drive down Airport Road offered this scene a half mile or so out of the city limits of Indianola, MS.
The Lewis Grocer Company was a wholesale distributer servicing grocery stores throughout the Mississippi Delta. It was a major employer in Indianola for some time. The business was purchased by SuperValu, a larger company based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. They gradually scaled down operations, many jobs moving to Atlanta, GA and Anniston, Al. Now, only a small warehouse remains.
I don't know what this trailer was used for or how it came to be sitting on the side of this gravel road.
The Lewis name is still well known.
In Indianola, the local Boy Scout hut was named after Morris Lewis Jr., son of the founder of the Lewis Grocer Company. A small book was written a few years ago relating the history of the Lewis Grocer Company. My mother, who worked there for 27 years, has a copy.
