Annapolis, like most of the cities and towns of the Chesapeake region, are very much centered around the sea. In Annapolis, that is especially the case; the harbor is one of the oldest ports on the bay, and still quite active for fishermen, crabbers, and pleasure boaters. In addition, Annapolis is home to the US Naval Academy (which sadly I wasn't able to visit much of on this trip - luckily I'll be back in Annapolis in a few weeks!).
This shot is of the inner harbor of the city, a small spit of water known as Ego Alley, named because it tends to be a showcase for the nicer of the crafts that pass through Annapolis. This little tour boat may not stroke the ego, but it did pick up the sun nicely against the pier close to sunrise on my visit.

An exquisite photo, Andrew, well made on the boat anchored scenery.
The DOF clarity and reflection very well collected.
Water surface seem to "polished" by great daylight.

Great POV and lovely light with clear sharp shot and great reflection. Nice use of he posts as a lead line in too. I like the little boat's "face" it kind of reminds me of a cute little duckling!

A delightful photo, full frontal of this charming boat on placid water. You have the benefit of soft sunlight, the reflection and the row of jetty posts, and you captured them superbly. It's a really atmospheric picture, presenting the morning light beautifully. It's great to see shots like this where the photographer has resisted any temptations to produce harsh contrast and saturation, so the finished work here is subtle and pleasing. Nicely composed and very well exposed.
Andrew, the other.

Hello Andrew - Beautiful light and what a fabulous reflection; so clean. The poles make a good lead in line and the sunlight on them is very lovely. Top class shot in all respects. Warm regards rosemary

So this is where those delicious looking big crabs come from? Yum, yum.
Perhaps this little pleasure boat is not the most attractive of crafts, but you have taken this picture extremely well to show it off to best advantage. Your composition is truly excellent, the boat placed perfectly in the frame and with the row of large sunlit wooden pillars on the right framing it beautifully. The reflections in the calm water are delightful and the colours are strong and vibrant. Lovely light, perfect exposure and exquisite details and sharpness.
P.S. Nice to see that you too are taking advantage of the new larger upload sizes for TE!
P.P.S. On an enirely different note, I was doing a spot of browsing and came across this which might be of interest. Of course, I don't know in which service your grandfather served - army, navy or air force?

A very peaceful and pleasant summer morning picture! The boat and its reflection are well positioned in the composition and the long row of poles is a perfect balance.

Nice viewpoint here, whenever I see these crafts, I always tend to try and take a side on reflection shot, so nicely seen to catch this head on with the great light. It makes a unique catch, and the poles on the pier create excellent depth!
All the best

combination of so lovely, warm morning light and reflections in the water make your composition really spectacular!
I like the way you composed and framed the scene. It has unique, tranquil mood.
No wonder you´re happy to visit Annapolis again.
Have a good day

I had to laugh when I read Ego Alley and perfectly understood the insinuations!
The tall verticals at the right have a strong presence, act as a guide and create a fine sense of perspective. Then, you get to the boat and what a sensation that is with its full frontal, doubled by its excellent reflection!
The dof is great for this shot, the main elements sharp with a gentle blurring into the distance.
My warm regards,

What a wonderful morning in this harbour! The row of poles and its reflections, the boat also reflected, all this make for a marvelous view. And we can see some nice building on the shore. i can imagine nice atmosphere there in a quiet morning.
have a nice day

It may not be the most impressive of boats, but whoah your composition compensates more than enough for that. Cleverly framed with the wooden posts leading in to the scene, superb colors and a gorgeous reflection of the boat in the water, this is a real winner indeed.
have a great day

I love this photo - I acquired the love of boats from my father - what I really like are the wonderful reflections in the water - never two the same - something magical about boats & harbours.
The clarity of your photo is excellent as is the colours POV & overall content.

This image looks so..European..I guess the South has keeped more than the rest of your country the heritage of the Old World. Great image, I like the colors and the calm mood.
Have a great day.

We don't often see water shots from you, so this is such a treat. Particularly given that it 's such an excellent example of this genre. stunning light and colours. The image is exquisite, luminous and well-composed. The vertical frame was well chosen too. Well done, congrats.
willperrett (4861) 2013-08-09 1:00
In my humble opinion, this boat is much more attractive, and certainly more photogenic than the average gin-palace that I imagine populates this creek! Great vertical composition, and pleasant, true colours. Nice one.
rigoletto (33751) 2013-08-27 7:14
excellent pov, looks like you were standing on water. the soft light is delightful. real colors, large format and sharp details make me feel like i was standing by you. the colorful houses hidden at the bg also look like handsome opportunities for graphical photos.
ps: delaware vs. tanzania. yours is also not that bad at all :))

well, nice to see you back! I'm sure you've had quite the interesting summer with your baby and growing family! i can only imagine!!!
as for this photo, I've never been to Maryland, so i really don't know what to expect. Perhaps its similar to the Eastern Canadian Provinces of Nova Scotia or PEI?
looking back into the photo the architecture sure looks charming, with a distinct style for sure.
excellent smoothness and clarity to the shot, especially with the water and boat.
love that royal blue bottom color.
see you around!
The red sox are looking good!

A very original composition with a nice contrast between the dock on the right and the boat on the left, with the added symmetry created by the reflection of the water.
Plus, vibrant colors and perfect sharpness.

Excellent capture of this charming corner of the town. The fine light together with the calm water surface produces wonderful reflections. The vertical format was ideal here and accentuate the verticality of the scene. Lovely shot! TFS.
Have a nice WE.
Best regards, Erling

You certainly got the most out of the morning light. it sets a very peaceful mood to this scene. The stillness of the water also helps set a calming tone, it's a virtually glass! Love this composition too, the alignment of dock posts easily leads right to the the boat, which is perfectly placed within the frame. Many fine qualities and execution of details here, but more than anything, its the atmosphere conveyed that I find the most appealing...Ii can almost hear the quiet. :) Great shot! Have a nice evening. Hope all is well. Take care.
