Photographer’s Note
French settlers were the first to bring Mardi Gras to the New World in 1699, at the mouth of the Mississippi River in the Louisiana Territory, which today is New Orleans. In 1857 was the first parade, and in 1875 Mardi Gras became an offical Louisana State holiday.
The Mardi Gras traditional colors are purple for Justice, green for Faith, and gold for Power. This color tradition was supposedly chosen by Grand Duke Alexis Alexandrovitch Romanoff of Russia during a visit to New Orleans in 1872.
