Photographer’s Note
One of the less elaborate Civil War forts constructed in Bowling Green, Ft. Webb was built by large numbers of men with shovels and picks, who merely dug into the ground and threw their dirt onto the parapet. In this way, the fort was literally "thrown up" (a millitary building term).
