This shot was taken at Chippewa Square in Savannah, Georgia. There are 4 of these lions guarding each corner of a statue of James Oglethorpe. James Oglethorpe founded Savannah, Ga in 1733. In 1751, Georgia became a Royal Colony and Savannah was named it's capital. The city was originally built around the design of 4 "squares". This square (Chippewa) was built in 1815 and the statue of James Oglethorpe was placed there in 1910. The squares are perhaps one of the most important features in Savannah's history. Ellis Square, one of the first 4, was demolished in 1954 sparking the beginning of the historic preservation movement in Savannah. The 50 year lease which resulted in Ellis Square being demolished ran out in 2004 and the city is currently rebuilding it.

Savannah is filled with so much beauty, excitement, tranquility and history it's a "must visit" destination for any photographer or history lover.
