Photographer’s Note
This was at Lowry Park Zoo, just outside of Tampa, Florida. At 10:30am, this mating pair of gibbons began howling a noisy duet that echoed throughout the zoo. The male (foreground) screeched a stream of high-pitched notes while the female droned a rhythmic baseline. All the while, the male swung around the structure with shocking grace and ease. This went on for 30 minutes and happened again in the afternoon. According to the signage by their enclosure, the pair uses their song to "bond" to each other. Whatever floats your boat, eh?
Lighting was great so I didn't have to work too hard to track them as they moved around. I chose this shot to post because of the clarity of expression in both of their faces. I cropped it slightly to keep the frame filled. The male swinging in from the top left gives it a nice energy.
