Photographer’s Note
This is the view from the fueling dock at the Fernandina Beach City Marina. Notice the American flag flying high over this island of 8 flags. Amelia Island, a scant thirteen miles long and 2 miles wide gracing the northeast coast of the state of Florida, enjoys a unique and fascinating history. The only community to have experienced life under eight different flags, this beautiful and charming seaport village is characterized by stately Victorian era architecture and a history that rivals any in the country.
The 8 Flags of occupation which flew over AmeliaIsland:
1 - French Period, 1562-1565
2 - First Spanish Period, 1565-1763
3 - British Period, 1763-1783
- Second Spanish Period, 1783-1821
4 - Patriot Period, 1812
5 - Green Cross Period, 1817
6 - Mexican Period, 1817
7 - United States (FloridaTerritory), 1821-1845
- United States (Florida - 27th State), 1845
8 - Confederate Nation, 1861-1862
- United States, 1862-present

Hello Asa,
Absolutely fascinating note accompanying this very good photograph. Virginia, settled by the British in 1607, is generally regarded as that settlement that took hold, but we forget that Florida had successful occupation 45-years earlier. Therre is also a group of people living in the Appalachians who call themselves "Melungeons," who claim to be descendents of prisoners, set on shore on the Coast of North Carolina and Virginia in 1557. According to their tradition, they were Turks, Greeks, Armenian (but mainly Turks), who moved inland, intermarried, and married natives. They claim that Mary Todd Lincoln, Ava Gardner and Elvis Presley among their own. This was all regarded as highly suspect by historians, until the NIH performed DNA anaylsis on them, and showed that they had Meditteranean blood.
Warm regards,
Bulent

Excellent lighting and really beautiful rich colours. I like the three bands of interest ... sea, sky and then the harbour itself. What impresses me most is the sharpness and overall general quality of the shot. Well done.

Hi, Asa. The place looks very peaceful. A little strange for an island with such an eventful history. The colours and the contrast are very good here and the foreground gives a good depth to the picture.

Bonjour Asa,
une photo qui ne dégage pas grand chose comme sujet, mais j'en aime vraiment les couleurs et ces parfaites lumières.
Une vue vraiment estivale qui nous plonge dans une météo agréable.
Bien à toi.
