Photographer’s Note

This is my second posting of this church, this time under much better lighting conditions and using a better angle. Thanks to all the comments on my first attempt I feel that this shot is much better.
Father John Bertazzi, who arrived in the United States from Genoa , Italy, to be pastor in Savannah, Georgia came to Amelia Isl. Father Bertazzi's labors in Fernandina Beach lasted until 1879. During that time, he built the present St. Michael Church, which was named in honor of Father Michael de Aunon, who was martyred during the time the Indian Rebellion against the Franciscans in 1597. The church was of course, dedicated under the patronage of St. Michael the Archangel in remembrance of martyred father. Much of the credit for the building of St. Michael, however, must be given to Bishop Verot who gave every encouragement, financial as well as spiritual, to the completion of the church. The 138x42 brick church was dedicated in September, 1872. A brick wall near the entrance of the present St. Michael now marks the final resting place of Fathers Sartorio and Bertazzi, whose unflagging efforts made St. Michael a reality. (St Michaels)
