Photographer's Note

According to the 2010 census, Bokeelia has a population of 1,780, which means it might be the only community in Lee County and the greater Fort Myers-Cape Coral area to actually shrink since the 2000 census was taken. I don't know for sure but I think Hurricane Charley in August 2004 had something to do with that. The eye of the storm passed just beyond the end of this fishing pier. Bokeelia is at the very northern tip of Pine Island and, just like the rest of the island, suffered catastrophic damage when Charley strengthened from at catagory 2 hurricane to a catagory 4 in a matter of just minutes.

All evidence of Charley is long gone now and Bokeelia is once again the quaint, quiet, beautiful and friendly community it always was.
