Happy Mother’s Day 2009
Mother’s Day is celebrated in many places in the world. In the U. S., it is always celebrated on the second Sunday in May. My post today is to remember my mother and to wish everyone a day filled with special moments and happy memories.
The azaleas pictured are only a few of the thousands of many different varieties covering over 40 acres of a wooded hillside at the National Arboretum. At this time of year in late April and May, azaleas burst into a display of vibrant color. They are always blooming at Mother’s Day.
The arboretum, established in 1927, is operated by the United States Department of Agriculture's Agricultural Research Service. It is 1.78 square kilometers (440 acres) in size, and is located 3.5 kilometers (2.2 mi) northeast of the U. S. Capitol. Nine miles of roadways wind through and connect the numerous gardens and collections of trees and plants on the grounds of the arboretum.

Hello Betty,
Gentle, peaceful photograph suitable for Mother's Day!
You are catching well azaleas with various color(white, red, orange and purple) within one shot. And, the comparison with green of a surrounding tree is clear, and the atmosphere of spring is caused.
Best regards,

Hello Betty,
a heart-warming gesture which can be appreciated especially by those who (like me) can already hand over their flowers to their mothers only virtually. You tried to give her as many flowers as possible, more than allowed by the file size limit - I am afraid, I would have done the same.
Thank you with warm whishes

Hello Betty,
Both artistically and technically this is a surpassing photograph. It is beautifully composed, and the colors and resolution are extraordinary for a photo limited by a 300 KB file size. This is a touching tribute to your mother. Is this a place she had seen? Many years ago when I visited the National Arboretum an unexpected surprise for me was the collection of Japanese bonzai trees.
Warm regards from Atlanta.

Bonjour Betty,
les femmes et les mamans aiment les fleurs et aussi se les faire offrir, achetées ou cueillies peu importe.
Une vue superbe bien remplie mais pas surencombrée. Très beaux jeux de couleurs.
Amicalement.
Daniel.

Hello Betty
You are a bit in advance for us ;) because in France we'll celebrate the mother's day, the last Sunday of the May unless Pentecost is on the same day, in which case it is the first Sunday in June.
I think this year it will be on June the 7th...
Anyway, your image is a nice tribute for all the mothers!
Cheers

Hi, Betty,
There is not much I can add to the well deserved praise you've received for this photo. But I'll say what I can, anyway.
Azaleas are a wonderful subject for a photograph because they bloom so effusively. But their season of beauty is short lived. This scene is superb because almost all of the azaleas are at or close to their peak visual display. And what a display it is, with who can count how many different tones of red, pink, and purple.
Your composition has done well in capturing the visual richness of the space. By cutting off the plants in the lower left and right, you give us the sense that this space continues (forever?). You also give us a nice balance between the flowering shrubs in the foreground and those in the midfield, all lying under a lush canopy.
The technical execution is strong, too, with good depth of field allowing everything in the frame to be in focus.
Kudos!
- William
