Photographers Note
Six months ago I had posted the image of a small child at an art gallery as The Young Connoisseur, where a three year old boy appeared transfixed by the sight of a large 18th century painting. The present photo with the little girl concentrating on the Salvador Dali painting, Sacrament of the Last Supper, can be regarded as a sequel to the Young Connoisseur. The room in the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC where the painting hangs was virtually devoid of visitors when the childs mother brought her into the room in a stroller. I noticed that the little girl appeared fascinated by the painting. She instinctively climbed out of her stroller and approached Dali's painting. Her mother reported that this young connoisseur is 3 1/2 years old.
Surrealism, cest moi! Dali used to boast, and rightfully so. Although no rendition of the Last Supper (nor for that matter any other painting in history has the power of Leonardo's "Last Supper," Dali's version is one of the more memorable. Painted for the National Gallery in 1954-55, Dali created his work with Christ and the twelve apostles placed symmetrically. The sun setting behind Christ creates shadows on the table of each of the apostles, the two halves of a small loaf of bread, and even the glass of wine. Christ, a transparent-translucent creature, casts no shadow. The background is a bay near Dalis home of Port Lligat in Catalonia. The painting has a length-to-width ratio of 1.618 to 1.000, the golden ratio, just as in the Parthenon, a creation of Phidias in the Periclean Age of Greece.
A polyhedral shape, located just below the arms of the Lord (the Lords face omitted), is used as an organizing frame. It happens to be the dodecahedron with 12 pentagonal façades. Dali explained the significance of the figure as a celebration of the number 12: the twelve apostles, the twelve hours of daylight, the twelve months of the year
For the Pythagoreans of antiquity the dodecahedron was alone among the five regular polyhedra for not being associated with one of the four basic elements indivisible entities or "atomos" that comprised all matter. (The others are the tetrahedron, cube, octahedron and icosahedron.) The dodecahedron was a cult figure representing the shape of the universe. Salvador Dali most likely did not know this, but what poetic irony that he would unwittingly choose the dodecahedron to frame the thirteen individuals.
When I was a young undergraduate I met Mr. Dali, and even sat at a dinner next to him. He was a colorful, engaging character, with a dry sense of humor. Recently, a friend sent me the UTube, that I would like to share with you, if youve stayed with me through the interminable text: Salvador Dali on Whats my Line?, an old television program that I remember from my youth

Hi Bulent,
I've read about this painting in your book...very interesting context. This image is really good. The girl does her part in the compo, creating a focal point even with that wonder on the wall. Well done!

I may never shave my moustaches again if this is not one of the best posts I ever witnessed on TE...!!!
1. There is a PHOTOGRAPHY in there... It's not a fotka as thousands of them , from museum... Any museum...
It's a well composed and beautifully arranged and executed - a photograph
2. There is a merit to it...
It really IS the subject of your note, professore Atalay.
3. I may say with the great certainty that it truly enriched my knowledge about such incredible artist of our times, like Salvador Dali (within the last few years I had my doubts if it comes to the purpose of existing of this site..??? You, master Atalay, you renewed that purpose and brought it up to a new height !)
4.Your note contains those indispensable elements - so necessary in every elaborate about the art and science combination, like : Dodecahedron, icosahedron and tetrahedron, even though - I'll surely miss the steamy and succulent geometrical dimensions of full breasted, Greek goddess - Gaea or the long legs of Artemis
:-)))) (Polonaise wouldn't be a Polonaise without a pinch of salt in the chocolate cake !)
Dear Professore
It's solid chunk of a very good work
And you do this for us - FREE of charge
(???)
And this might be the only imperfection I found in your today's post..
May God bless your presence among us, sir
Deep bow

This young lady seems quite intrigued by the huge work of art in front of her.
Excellent use of light renders soft pleasing colors and details to this lovely image.
Great note as usual.

Hello, Bulent -
The note is more fascinating than the painting, and the girl is more fascinating - and fascinated - than the note. :-)
I've always liked Dali, especially his earlier work, during the main surrealist period (late 20's -30's). There are problems with his later work, including that of provenance; he was, apparently, in the hands of some unscrupulous people who would convince him to sign blank sheets of litho paper.
Best,
Dan

Hi Bulent, your composition is like an extension of the painting making the little girl a virtual-part of Dali's art-work in another dimension, in harmony, complementing, like one of Raffael's angels. I call the painting Dali's Gateway to this very famous Last Supper with you yourself as the present master, passed on to the next generation, each his own style. A very spiritual Dali you are showing us, and interestingly, very symmetrical the positions of the apostles which is also supported by the geometric frame(pentadodecahedron?). Thanks for sharing...Alex

Hi Bulent,
You do seem to adore children as I have seen several in your images. This composition i svery interesting because of the pose and interest of the child in the painting. The light and colours look great and enhance the quality and pleasant mood of this composition. Thanks Bulent :-)

Merhaba Bulent. These little connoisseurs of yours add a delightful touch to the subject of Art. Such concentration in that little body!Nice composition, softly appropriate colours and light. Nothing intrusive between the painting and the young admirer. I remember seeing a documentary about Dali years ago and was struck by the difference in expression between the young, brazen and often outrageous genius and the old, terrified man who knew death was near. The pointed, thin moustache (his trademark), looked icgongruous below that terrified stare that looked into the void. I still shudder when I remember that look. Selamlar. Klaudio.

This one and your previous shot with a similar idea are both excellent shots, the scenery is perfect as your composition, very well captured. very good POV, colors and frame. Very instructive note as usual.

Cher ami Bulent,

Wouldn't it be marvelous to know what she was thinking? I love her posture and because she is small, the way she is looking up at the painting, almost in reverence. I do realise I am being fanciful here. On an artistic note it was fortunate she was wearing those colours. Primary colours would have ruined the mood of the whole scene. Excellent shot Bulent

Hello Bülent,
This painting brought me back to memory your book on Leonardo da Vinci and your other post with the boy also staring at a painting. Despite we don't see her face, her 'body language' suggests that she is really absorbed in apreciating the painting, something remarkable for a child so young.
It's a very interesting and intriguing photo that accompanies very well the excellent note that features a concise lesson on Art History and the interesting anecdote of your meeting with Dali.
Warm regards, José.
You gave me an idea to incite my son's curiosity to visit the Dali Museum in Figueres in a few days.

Good morning Bulent
Apart from this excellent presentation of the painting and the analysis in depth of the painting I would like to add my humble opinion, also supported by Dr.Chr.Christou, that Dali really lacked any sense and expression of religiosity at least in this painting. He probably saw it as another good contract and certainly put all his talent and imagination in creating a masterpiece. I wonder if he would have done the same had he been commissioned by the Pope.

Hello Bulent
Some time ago not visited your gallery and I think this wonderful scene.
If it is difficult for us to understand the pictorial art of Dali, I believe that in the eyes of the girl child, not be so complicated. It will have its own interpretation of it, for it is like watching animated cartoons.
The scene strikes me as very charming, timely and balanced, with appropriate management of the light inside an enclosed space. Congratulations.

Hello Bulent,
a delicate post that catches the awe and thrill of this little "girl". I love how your caught the expression of the head, the fact tha she is the only one on front of this masterpiece increases the strenght of the photo and I like the framing and presentation. Powerful and innovative, very impressive as always.
All the best.

Hi Bulent,
I missed lots of your photos... This one i like much! The walls' angles give a striking cubic volume with symmetric framing and slightly off centered kid , kind of scratching her backside adds a lot too...
Well captured!

This simply is an extraordinary photo. I could not imagine a 3 years old girl looking so attentive to a Dali painting. I would like to know what was going in her imagination at that right time. Amazing.
The painting itself and many other Dali paintings I did admired them many years ago (in 1980) when they were on exhibition in Paris, at Centre Pompidou. Dali is one of my preferred painters.
Congratulations for this wonderful work.

Merhaba Profesör,
Müze fotoğrafı çekmek ayrı bir sanat sanırım. Istediğiniz bir ziyaretçiyi kadraja dahil ederken istenmeyen ziyaretçi görüntüsünden uzaklaşmak, müzedeki sanat eserini fotoğrafın kompozisyonu içinde kullanabilmek, bunların zorluğu yetmezmiş gibi bir de müzelerin işleri zorlaştırıcı ışıklandırması...
Bu zorlukların hepsini güzelce atlatıp bilgilendirici notunuzla önümüze sunmuşsunuz... Ne diyeyim, ellerinize sağlık...
Saygılar,
Burcu

j'aime le cadrage, j'aime les couleurs douces, et l'attitude de cette fillette. celle avec le jeune était très belle aussi mais là, devant un Dali en prime je m'extasie!

Hi Bulent,
I'm impressed by the variety and quality of your gallery.
I took this one for a start because of the interaction between the dramatic painting and the kis that is realy watching it. The tension is very strong and the composition clear.

Hello Master Bulent,
as always your note is almost more valuable of the picture. I did see this tv show recently! Very funny, but I think impossible to guess, so the lady who won had a clue by somebody of the audience ;-D
Now the picture: you don't need to read here that it is perfect, so I won't write it, even if I think it is. What amuse me is the "doll", she's surely thinking "What the hell are these men doing dressed like this?". I wish I was her mother, to know it.
Have a good week

Ah, the innocence of youth Bulent, it just goes to show we are never too young to learn. It's a wonderful shot, the colours are very complimentary and I remember well 'The Young Connoisseur', another beautiful capture.
Kind regards my friend,

Mr. Atalay,
I hesitated between this photograph and the one titled "The Young Connoisseur" to leave my critique. Both exemplary represent the curiosity that certain master pieces can provoke in young fellows.
I like the subtle and harmonic colors in this image and of course, the attentive and fascinated attitude of the young girl towards Dali's painting. There is a special sense of solitude (one room, one painting, and one observer) that creates a unique interaction between the subject and the object.
A very interesting point, remarkably highlighted in your note, is the use of the dodecahedron as an organizing frame in Dali's painting. I would say, that the way you have also included the angles of the room to envelope both the girl and the painting, creates a second polyhedral/cubical frame on the picture.
Excellent note!
Congratulations.

Bonjour Bulent.
J'aime cette confrontation de cette petite fille avec une uvre de Dali. Je suis sûr que l'enfant voit des choses qu'un adulte ne sait plus voir depuis longtemps.
Superbe !
Amicalement
Jacques
