THOMAS JEFFERSON MEMORIAL AND THE TIDAL BASIN
This is a second posting from the Cherry Blossoms Festival in Washington, that commenced on March 31st at the Tidal Basin. I had elaborated about the festival and these beautiful trees when I submitted the earlier image. To recapitulate, the Tidal Basin is a large man-made pond to handle the overflow in high tides on the Potomac River. Around it are a number of very beautiful memorials to great Presidents in United States History. There is the 167 meter (555-foot) Washington Monument, resembling a colossal obelisk, and celebrating the first President of the United States.
There is also the F.D.Roosevelt Memorial, the newest of the monuments built around the Basin. In fact, it was from the grounds of the latter that I shot this image of the Jefferson Memorial. Its shape is evocative of Jefferson’s own design for the Rotunda Building at the University of Virginia, which Jefferson founded, and which had been inspired by the Pantheon in Rome. (That connection makes the Jefferson Memorial the "grandson" of the Pantheon.) Situated at the southern periphery of the Tidal Basin, it houses a 5.2 m-tall standing statue of the third President, Thomas Jefferson.
I took the photo on March 30, the day before the festival, knowing that these grounds would be subjected to a human deluge on March 31, when the festival commenced. It is a hand-held shot with a Nikon D-70. Mounted on the camera was an 18-70 mm Nikkor lens, with a 67-mm circular polarizing filter.

İyi pazarlar Dear Professor,
Perfect share of spring with this wonderful Cherry Blossoms Fest photo. Your compo looks like any aesthetic post sent from Japan. The domed architecture resembles the magnificent Pantheon in Rome. I love the overall share.

interesting to see 'hanami' in USA! this is a well composed pic with the cherry blossom sheltering the monument and the lighting in background is quite good. perhaps sharpness is lacking slightly but overall excellent.

Joli cliché de ce mémorial qui se laisse apercevoir au-travers de ce bel arbre fleuri. Voilà une belle image printanière.
Merci pour le partage et bon dimanche.

Is this the real spring or what...!
The atmosphere is so well captured, and can there be a better frame than cherry in full blossom...
Great composition, fine details!
salvator (19102) 2007-04-01 5:33

A superb photo in the right season.
Good evening Bulent.
You really made us to feel that we are in the spring.
Splendid cherry blossoms around of Jefferson's memorial.
It looks like if it came out from a very pleasure dream.
Thank you .
My warm regards
TravelerNL (3011) 2007-04-01 15:58
Very nice POV with the look thru the blossoming cherry tree. Nice colors and beautiful clear and sharp light.
emjleclercq (15780) 2007-04-01 17:26
Very nice framing, with the blossoming tree around this white, classical building. Combined with the water, this makes a nice panel of soft colors.
All the best,
jwmunro (286) 2007-04-01 17:37
Good afternoon Bulent -
This is the classic iconic image of the Washington Cherry Blossoms. IMO, the image is just a bit soft with the details in the background and the blossoms up front. You did not post any of the metadata so I am at a loss to suggest any improvements.
Thank you for sharing.

Thank you very much for the critiques on two of my photos and your friendly words!
This shot is lovely! I really like the cherry blossoms in the shot, that are a great frame for the memorial. The light is very pleasant as well. Great work, thanks for sharing!
stego (24030) 2007-04-01 21:21
Spring beauty framing that famous monument of Washington... The white flowers of the tree combine nicely with the marble of the building on the bg.
The only unimportant minor flaw is the relative lack of sharpness and saturation.

Merhaba Bülent Bey,
Çiçek açmış ağaç dalları ile güzel bir çerçeve oluşturmuşsunuz. Derinlik ve netlik çok iyi olmuş. Elinize sağlık.
thea0211 (1365) 2007-04-02 2:06
beautiful piece of man-made architecture nicely framed by beautiful piece of natural 'architecture'; visually appealing composition! i believe it must have been a nice festival.
interesting note, as usual.
tfs and have a great week,
axiotea (21649) 2007-04-02 5:12
A pleasant spring atmosphere and I like the way, you naturally framed 'the monument' with the cherry branch in blossom in FG. Nice light/shade contrasts and framing.
Have a nice day

This is a very beautiful photo. Composed with great elements: flower, building, and water. It is also a photo to welcome Spring.
JCG (35129) 2007-04-02 11:55
It is a very beautiful composition really pleasant with the eye and the moral one. It is a landscape which makes also think of Japan with all this flowering. Judicious vertical framing here which highlights the memorial well. And like always thank you for this interesting note.
With my all friendship and a very good day,
bostankorkulugu (42080) 2007-04-02 15:53
ahmetgedikli (25482) 2007-04-02 20:17
Meyve ağaçlarının çiçek açması baharın habercisi olsa gerek... Ağacın altından karşıdaki kubbeli yapının görünümü de hoş. Elinize sağlık, saygılar.
Henryk_Bilor (20799) 2007-04-03 3:50
Lovely place, nice colours. Interesting building. But... I think there is too much of the tree and I can`t concentrate on any theme ;).
feather (51130) 2007-04-03 9:17
This must be a stunning sight to see with all this blossom. You have composed this image perfectly using the beautiful blossom to frame the memorial. The triangle of walkway included in the foreground makes an excellent lead-in. Very good light and sharpness considering all this blossom probably used up a lot of memory. Good work.
wilkinsonsg (8662) 2007-04-03 14:43
Very well composed image, the colours are fresh and the note is an added bonus - TFS :)
zeca (19762) 2007-04-04 0:05
This tree is really wonderful and you´ve done a nice framing using it. Excellent shot!
PJE (20758) 2007-04-04 21:43
Bulent I am drawn to this photo in your gallery for comment. The spring blossoms here in Washington are arranged in this frame in a wonderful way. Excellent point of view from under the branches Bulent. Thanks for sharing!
AROBN54 (11473) 2007-04-04 22:07
This is simply heavenly. The framing with that flowering tree and the monument perfectly located beneath is just breathtaking. The lighting is perfect. I love the shaded foreground and the well lit monument in the background. Beautiful shot! Kind regards,
sabyasachi1212 (19773) 2007-04-05 5:58
The Cherry Blossoms seem to be everywhere these days. But this is no run of the mill photograph. Excellent framing idea.

I love how the tree drapes the Memorial. .. I love the wonderful parallels in the white tones of the tree and the arch of the branches to the Memorial as well .. beautiful image.
delic (6735) 2007-04-07 11:01
I have always found the Jefferson Memorial quite photogenic, esp. in the winter. Here it is nicely framed by the cherry blossoms. Mr. Jefferson would be proud with this photo.
henrytf (985) 2007-04-09 19:37
Back again to your beautiful pictures and your interesting comments.
Your photograph os the Cherry Blossoms Festival is superb. I like the variations of white in the flowers and in the building across the Basin. The light is perfect.
singuanti (15250) 2007-04-10 22:25
Hi Bulent. You were wise to head down a hair early to beat the crowds. I went down last Tuesday when it was still warm out after work and it was crowded. I like how carefully you framed the blossoms not to cover up the Jefferson Memorial at all. You had a good light too. tfs Bulent!

The critic for this lovley spring image would be...
a haiku from the master of Kobayashi Issa (June 15, 1763 - January 5, 1828)
cherry trees in full bloom--
colds, no doubt
fallan (1860) 2007-04-12 18:42
Great framing of the monument. This took me a little by surprise as I always thought the flowers were pink.
keribar (43841) 2007-04-14 1:14
This is exactly what I have missed in Washington DC, if I had not been able to ruck back home. The cherry blossoms were in full bloom, and I would certainly try as you did you here to combine the monuments with them.
This one would probably need a little more sharpness, and a tripod is quite conveniant for better framings and stepping down apertures for greater depth of field. At least this is what I would try to do. But the framing is perfect, with the tree embracing both the Jefferson Memorial, the sakura and the pond. I was thinking about reflections, perhaps in the eraly morning ? before the breeze starts up ?
Frienbly yours - Izzet
bruce_wayne (1507) 2007-04-14 11:32
WOnderful composition...I like this natural frame made by this tree.
Nice shadows and flowers...you made a good work

Beautiful shot with natural frame and very well composed. The lighting is perfect as well as the colours. I also like very much the depth. Splendid work!

This one is perfect. The framing of the flowers are great.
Great composition. TFS!

Hello Bülent - the cherry blossom season seems to be the best time to be in DC, I really like how the blossoms fill the sky, I agree with some others in that there is a subtle lack of sharpness probably because of resizing.
jaywalker (16101) 2007-05-18 18:10
Hi Bulent, I will admit I missed this photo & it is excellent, the white blossom goes wonderfully with the pure white of the Jefferson Memorial, I went to Washington DC in the late 80s & this was one place I loved, however I never got an opportunity to shoot a shot like this, stunning POV & great composition, kind regards Wilson.
lukasson (133) 2007-05-24 12:00
I'm really impressed with the composition on this photo. The tree frames the structure really well, and the blossom is beautiful.
I also like the horizontal line of the land across the pond, in contrast to the diagonal line of the land this side.
utkue (3420) 2007-06-23 16:51
Değerli Bülent Bey,
