| I just thought this was a cool building; very colorful! Another photo from my Fort Smith series. This was taken on the main street in the western part of town, just off Garrison Avenue. It's the main "downtown" part of the town in the westernmost region, which my parents remember being much more vibrant in decades past. It seems that a lot of the "action" has now shifted to the eastern part of the town. A lot of restoration has taken place on Garrison Avenue and the vicinity over the past few years, however, partly because of tornado damage that occurred in April, 1996. It's a very historic town, however, and there are several sites designated on the National Register of Historic Places. This small town in America's heartland was founded as a western frontier military post in 1817, and, believe it or not, was really located on the frontier of the "wild west" for many years, as Indian Territory lay directly to the west! It's now Arkansas's second largest city at about 84,000 people; the population has increased over the past few years, partly because of the founding of the University of Arkansas, Fort Smith (previously WestArk community college), designated as such officially in 2002. |
