| I came across this photo the other day and had to post it! Anyone who's lived in this town has seen and probably been there many times, that is, until they tore it down a few years ago! :< but the memories still remain... I had a relative mail me a newspaper article and I FOUND IT! UPDATE! Info in the article says that it was located at 2806 Towson Avenue. The first owner opened a "store" in 1947; Ray Porter sold ice, melons and hamburgers from a trailer on 10th street. Nick Sakis opened Worldburger 2 at 2300 Towson Ave in 1950, which was moved to this site in 1952. W. T. "Dub" Bromley bought both locations from Fay Nation in 1954 and opened a third Worldburger on Jenny Lind Rd. which closed in 1961. The 10th St. location was sold in 1977, leaving this the only Worldburger in Fort Smith. Ken Yocum bought the drive-in in 1985 and opened a Worldburger Too on Hwy 271 in 1994. Both operations continued until his death in August, 2002. I've heard my dad talk about these burgers my whole life, and I've had my fair share of them! They were enormous and cost just 50 cents apiece when the restaurant first opened; customers could also listen to jukebox music over the speakers! My parents both said that it was a very popular hangout, where people just congregated, cruised, and ate! The whole article is in the Fort Smith Times Record: Monday, November 24, 2003, if anyone's interested! |
