Photographer's Note
This photograph was taken on the island of
St. John in the U.S. Virgin Islands. Ruins of
old sugarcane plantations still dot the island
and serve as a reminder that slavery, along with
the production of rum, molasses, and table sugar,
shaped the early economic history of St. John.
