I photographed the ice cream man as he left after selling me an excellent cup of coconut ice cream. This was shot in the main square "Plaza de las Delicias" ("Plaza of Delights") in downtown Ponce, Puerto Rico.
The Plaza de las Delicias dates from before 1840, however, it used to be two plazas until the 1900s. Dividing the north side from the south, are the La Catedral de Guadalupe (Cathedral to the Virgin of Guadalupe) and "El Parque de Bombas" (The Old Firehouse -- built for the 1882 Expo).
The north end of the plaza used to be known as "Paseo de La Alameda", but today it is known as "La Plaza Muņoz Rivera". The northern plaza is quiet and has a small fountain, many trees, and a statue of Christopher Columbus.
The southern end of the plaza used to be known as "La Plaza Mayor", but today it is known as "La Plaza Degetau". This plaza contains "La Fuente de los Leones" (The Fountain of the Lions) as well as a monument to Juan Morel Campos (the famous Puertorican composer). Across the street on the southern end is the "La Alcaldia" (The City Hall).
Surrounding the plaza are old and restored buildings now housing stores, banks, a museum, and a hotel among other things.
The streets used to be made up of blue cobble stones called "adoquines" (like those in Old San Juan), but they were removed during the late 1980s and replaced with pavement.
Here's an interesting photograph of the same side (north) of the plaza as it looked during the early 1900s: http://www.ponceweb.org/Fotos_Antiguas/plaza_ponce_1900.jpg. |
