Photographer’s Note
lake champlain lies in the champlain valley between the green mountains of vermont and the adirondack mountains of new york, the latter forming the horizon in the photo. the lake is mostly situated in the united states, but it's northern part stretches across the us/canadian border in the canadian province of quebec. the lake is drained in the north by the richelieu river into st. lawrence river near montreal whereas it is fed by a multitude of vermont and new york tributaries.
lake champlain is one of a number of large lakes spread in an arc from labrador through the northern united states into the norwest territories of canada. lake champlain is the sixth largest fresh water lake and the largest mountain lake in the united states (approximately 1130 square kilometers [435 square miles] in area), the lake is roughly 180 km (110 miles) long, and 19 km (12 miles) across at its wides point. the maximum depth is around 130 meters (400 feet), while the lake surface varies seasonably from about 95 to 100 feet (about 30 meters) above the mean sea level.
the lake was named after the french explorer samuel de champlain, who encountered it in 1609. while the ports of burlington (VT), port henry (NY), and plattsburgh (NY) are little used nowadays except by small craft, ferries and lake cruise ships, they had substantial commercial and military importance in the 18th and 19th century. the lake also played important role in the two british/american wars due to its natural function as water-highway from british canada into the heart of the US. naval warfare culminated in the battle of lake champlain (also known as battle of plattsburgh) fought on september 11, 1814. several US naval ships have been named after this battle.

oh... what a coincidence... this turns out to be my 100th post. so... what now? i guess, i am supposed to say something smart and philosophical... nah, i'd rather let the piktchure speak that part. :)) i will just grab this opportunity to thank you all for your friendship, support and the great advice i have received from you. has helped me tremendously. and, on the same token, thank you for a terrific year on this site!

congratulations on the 100th, and wish you many more great posts here :)
nice choice to mark this occasion, the fragile ship of an adventurous amateur bathed in the silvery light of the illuminating advices of TE gurus fits very well, I think. I like a lot the blue cast, dreamy and moody shot.

Hello Kristaps,
congratulations for your 100th post on this splendid site!
What can I say about this picture...it is simply wonderful, the sky is so threatening it looks like a painting. Your very smart point of view and the clarity are superb, allowing for a maximum enjoyment of both site and fine reflections in the water. A great one!
All the best.

Pretty impressive cloud action going on in this one Kristaps, and you have captured and posted a lot of that detail. The sail boat is also very nicely captured, the sail sedges are beautifully cutting across the glints of the water and it is all very pleasing. Great capture.

Hi, Kristaps -
I have to take issue with Kristine here; I think it's dramatic, not dreamy. Excellent balance of elements, and good capture of a sky setting that always gives me difficulty.
Nice 100. Now for an encore...

Hi Kristaps, The way you sandwiched this craft between the graphical power of the beautifully rendered sky and the xciting highlights of the water is lovely and evocative. Very well taken and presented! And of course congrats with this 100th pics! Have a fine evening,

Hi Kristaps,
Congratulations on your 10oth post and what a fine image you have chosen for the event. The shimmering silver blue lake and dramatic sky make for a beautiful lake landscape. The lone sailboat lends effective scale to this shinning beauty.

Hello Kristaps,
Congratulations for your 100th picture on TE, the starting for the next hunderd.
A very difficult picture for make with this strong backlight.
But, I like the a lot stars on the water with the sailboat in middle.
Also the dramatic sky and the mountain line in background care for a nice composition.
Very well done.
best regards,
John.

Hi Kristaps:
From the very moment that I saw, I call my attention this scenario.
The game cloud in the sky, contrasts significantly compared with the reflexes of water, which makes the sailboat, especially highly on stage.
Good frame, excellent handling of the horizon, strengthening the composition. Great job.

Hi Kristaps,
Congratulations on your 100th shot on TE!
The hard contrast and the shimmering light on the water give a nice effect here, and I especially like the light shining through the sails. It almost has a monocromatic colouring to it which is great. Well composed too giving the boat plenty of room to move into.

Hello Kristaps
Good backlight shot..always difficult to take. Love the shine on the water & the sail boat placed just about where the water shines the most. Like how you got the details of the rolling hills in the BG, despite facing the sun....and yes, congratulations on your 100th. It has been great to know you here in TE & wish to see many, many pictures from you in the coming years.

Hi, Kristaps. You've captured a dramatic sky which is a very good backdrop for the sails of the boat. I like the reflections on the right side contrasting with the blue water on the left. The backlight turned it into a difficult shot, but I think you managed quite well.

Hello Kristaps! Now I start to cry :)))) I have spent some summers in this area (you find a few pictures on TE ...) and Benno just said to me that we might as well be in Vermont considering the lousy weather we are in at the moment and I am speaking of Grand Junction/CO at the Utah border that hardly gets any rain ... I know the most wonderful campground overlooking Lake Champlain; it is my very secret hideaway if I need a rural treat ... if you need the "address" just tell me. I love the lake breeze that moves in from your photo. There is always a wonderful smooth summer wind that comes over the farm fields from the lake and I find you captured that mood ... for me!
It is great to have you on board and I hope you sail along for another long round with us. I am at the airport right now and Benno waits that the weather clears up to go flying with the instructor ... he is like a tiger moving up and down, checking the weather and the ceiling :) and a little grumpy maybe too ... men!!!!! Take care, more later, I normally don't visit the internet when I am on vacation but considering the rain I thought why not ... Barbara.

Hi Kristaps,
Very dramatic chiaroscuro for your 100th post. It speaks for you much more strongly than words. Being a sailor, I find the sailboat makes an outstanding focal point.

Hi Kristaps,
Congratulations for this 100th upload !
It's not easy to shot in these conditions especially for the clouds but at water level there is an effect of lightening the water that is very nice, even more considering the boat seems to bring it forward. Horizontal symetry could increase that nice effect a bit.
Have a nice day JY

A bit freaking late, but... congratulations for your 100th, Kristaps!
I'll have a beer on this one straight away.
With this kind of sideways backlighting I usually hit the nearest bar as soon as humanly possible (or the cooler...), and forget about the camera.
But you done exceedingly well in managing a most difficult light without blowing anything, and that's more than worth a sizeable praise. VERY GOOD!
I just paid a visit to Kristine's 100th, so I'll repeat here what I just wrote there : after having mum & sister visiting I went through almost 2 weeks of heavy overtime on my work to catch up with stuff, hence my silence. I'm fine now and back on schedule, so I'll check out little by little what else you've posted lately.
Meanwhile : have a great day, I'll see you soon.
Cheers,
Fulvio.
