lake champlain lies in the champlain valley between the green mountains of vermont and the adirondack mountains of new york, the latter forming the horizon in the photo. the lake is mostly situated in the united states, but it's northern part stretches across the us/canadian border in the canadian province of quebec. the lake is drained in the north by the richelieu river into st. lawrence river near montreal whereas it is fed by a multitude of vermont and new york tributaries.

lake champlain is one of a number of large lakes spread in an arc from labrador through the northern united states into the norwest territories of canada. lake champlain is the sixth largest fresh water lake and the largest mountain lake in the united states (approximately 1130 square kilometers [435 square miles] in area), the lake is roughly 180 km (110 miles) long, and 19 km (12 miles) across at its wides point. the maximum depth is around 130 meters (400 feet), while the lake surface varies seasonably from about 95 to 100 feet (about 30 meters) above the mean sea level.

the lake was named after the french explorer samuel de champlain, who encountered it in 1609. while the ports of burlington (VT), port henry (NY), and plattsburgh (NY) are little used nowadays except by small craft, ferries and lake cruise ships, they had substantial commercial and military importance in the 18th and 19th century. the lake also played important role in the two british/american wars due to its natural function as water-highway from british canada into the heart of the US. naval warfare culminated in the battle of lake champlain (also known as battle of plattsburgh) fought on september 11, 1814. several US naval ships have been named after this battle.
