gray solitude Photo

Photographer’s Note

rhode island, newport beach, stormy, sun-lit (before the clouds and fog came) sun-less afternoon... doesn't it strike the very key note of the stern, gray solitude?

an on this grayish (but maybe not so gray, after all) note, i'd like to recall henry david throreau:

".... [the mountain] often reminded me of my walks on the beach, and suggested how much both depend for their sublimity on solitude and dreariness. In both cases we feel the presence of some vast, titanic power... Those who climb to the peak have seen but little of the mountain. I came not to look off from it, but to look at it. The view of the pinnacle itself from the plateau below surpasses any view which you get from the summit. It is indispensible to see the top itself and the sierra of its outline from one side.... It is remarkable what haste the visitors make to get to the top of the mountain and then look away from it."

Hi Kristaps,
Beautiful and poetic image(ry) here. The contrast between the lone woman facing the grey horizon and the sea- and windswept cliff, and ofcourse the PoV, really delivers here. I like this evocative and very well composed and xecuted pic a lot!

Hello my friend,I was browsing and came across your fine image taken with mellow mood ,the horizon gives great depth and the sublight help a perfect balance of your shot. I don't think you could better the quality or the sharpness,especially in the foreground,it's just outstanding. It's a superb capture,with the lonely woman to look far away to the sea.Well done Kristaps.

Hi Kristaps, how are you? I haven't been posting in a while but i did today. Your photo is really nice. Then little person surrounded but all the rocks, sky and water make it shows the solitude. Nice composition and POV. Would that be Kristine in the picture?

I love this one, man!
I love the melancholic feel to it and I love the way you managed the light Mother Nature provided you with. You really got the very best out of it.
Great depth of field, great sharpness and overall detail. And of course, with Kristine out there, the whole scene comes fully alive.

Hi Kristaps,
Very somber stark image of this large grey outcropping surrounded by the incoming tide. The cloudy day and crashing surf add a lonely beauty. The lone lady looking into the grayness gives nice scale and definition to this image.

Nice shot Kristaps, makes the girl look very insignificant and alone out on that rock. It also scales the scene very nicely, well seen and captured.

Hi Kristaps,
This photo is so true, a reality I've seen many times but one that is very difficult to capture. Usually shots on flat, grey days come out flat and grey. Let me see if I can define for myself how you made this one a reality. First, is the exquisite sharpness in the FG. Second are the many layers that give great DOF: a rocky shoreline with the waves cutting off a direct line to the rocky knoll, the lone tiny figure looking at the misty waves is also crucial. Finally, you managed to keep a misty texture in the fog rather than capturing the usual flat white. To my favs.

this is so beautiful, this is all I love so much, and the human presence of Kristine adds to the composition and mood. I would agree to have her a bit more on the side:-) if we have to be a bit technical...Grey is beautiful.
