Photographer’s Note

Yesterday was Independence Day in the United States. Every community in the country has its own way of commemorating the event. In Washington Crossing, many of the historical buildings were open to the public with costumed interpretors (such as this man) available for answering questions about the building and/or the era which they represent.

This man is dressed as an 18th century parson and was in the McConkey Ferry House. Like its name implies, this was an inn located on the site of a ferry crossing along the Delaware River. Folks traveling between Philadelphia and New York City often stopped at these little inns that dotted both sides of the river to wait to cross.

The McConkey Ferry House made history in December 1776 when General George Washington dined there with his staff prior to crossing the river on his way to attack the Hessians stationed at Trenton, NJ.
