An ordinary view of the main concourse of Central Station, NY. Like me, a set of ten people were shooting from that point of view :)
Reborn as "Grand Central Station," the reconfigured depot’s most prominent feature was undoubtedly its enormous train shed. Constructed of glass and steel, the 100-foot wide by 650-foot long structure rivaled the Eiffel Tower and Crystal Palace for primacy as the most dramatic engineering achievement of the 19th century. The updated station also featured a "classical" façade, a unified 16,000 square foot waiting room, and distinctive ornamentation, including monumental cast-iron eagles with wingspans of 13-feet (In fact, one of these eagles was recently salvaged and will rise again above Grand Central Terminal’s new entrance at 43rd Street and Lexington Avenue and the other one can be found on the corner of 42nd Street and Vanderbilt Avenue).
All the while, the age of the steam locomotive was drawing to a close. Earlier efforts to increase safety and reduce congestion, including the Fourth Avenue Improvement Scheme which lowered tracks below grade from Grand Central Depot to 56th Street and created a tunnel from 56th Street to 96th Street, had proved insufficient. Noise and air pollution were chronic, and public concern about safety was on the rise. A catastrophic train collision on January 8, 1902 in the smoke-filled Park Avenue Tunnel killed seventeen and injured thirty-eight, causing a public outcry and increasing demand for electric trains. One week later the New York Central and Hudson River Railroad announced plans to improve the Park Avenue Tunnel and expand Grand Central. By the end of the year, plans were in development -- spearheaded by the New York Central’s chief engineer William J. Wilgus -- to demolish the existing station and create a new double level terminal for electric trains.

Very good presentation of this famous station. Excellent managment of light in an intreior's view, the dored light arise very well and give a very beautiful harmony to the composition. POV well selcetd too with a plesant impression of symetry. The peoples give elements of life and interesting idea of the scale.
siolaw (38272) 2010-03-13 6:44
Good symmetric framing and well controlled exposure. Details are sharp and colors look good. 5 seconds worked well in blurring some of the people to give movement
lucasgalodoido (21051) 2010-03-13 7:13

Old Classic that never change.
I'd critique one thing: The croped flag . I always try not to "cut" any nation's flag, unless there are more than one flag in scene.
JCG (35129) 2010-03-13 8:30
I see that you are not the only one to photograph this superb and impressive architecture of this station. I like much the effect of the long exposure on the people moving what gives a really appreciable dynamism to the image. Good management of this interior soft light. Well done Carlos, cheer.
With all my friendships and a very good WE,
s_lush (16134) 2010-03-13 9:53
The interior of this concourse is very well designed and decorated. In addition the hall is so big, maybe bigger than that of Kharkiv's Southern station :). Including the people capturing this concourse along with you in the composition makes the picture looking even more interesting. Very good job under poor lighting conditions!
COSTANTINO (53757) 2010-03-13 10:48
interesting capture of the interior
of the station. Looks really imposing.

Bonsoir, cher Carlos,

Nice and well exposed view of this landmark station. other views I have seen were from a higher pov that allowed to fully include the stars & stripes but maybe this location was not available when you visited ?
have a nice day JY

Complimenti.
Un abbraccio, buon WE.
francio64 (38276) 2010-03-13 12:07
Have a nice sunday!
mauro61 (52623) 2010-03-13 15:01
pablominto (53744) 2010-03-13 23:54
That is an interior we have seen quite a few times, yeah!
The long exposure adds action and tells the story a railway station is a busy place with people hasting to and from...
Nice warm colours, fine details in the interior!

Bom dia Carlos!
diomed (13926) 2010-03-14 7:25

axiotea (21649) 2010-03-16 8:22
A good symmetric presentation of that famous station for which the 5s worked very well...to see the details of the imposing walls, columns, windows. The people gave a sense of scale to it and it is nice to see the reflections of some of them on the shiny floor. Lovely golden tones too!
Greetings from Bangkok
tusharkmandal (3171) 2010-03-16 10:31
Its a grand view of this very simple station. The golden light and the superb sharp details are excellent. Its a real honor to comment on your images. I am doing it for the first time ever since I joined TE. I have seen your images and is really impressed and inspired.
Regards and Have a Great Day

BWJ (3060) 2010-03-16 20:26
This is a great shot of Grand Central Station. The colors, lighting, DOF, and symmetry are particularly good. It is fun to imagine how exciting it must have been to arrive there on a train around 1900. There was a secret passage that went from the station upstairs to the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel. President Franklin D. Roosevelt used it as his private entry to the hotel to avoid reporters. Also, you may have noticed the famous zodiac painted on the ceiling is depicted backwards. I like your shot very much and I am adding it to my favorites.
dip (23532) 2010-03-17 1:29
impressive interior shot of the Central Station,
it must be the best POV,if all people were shooting from this point :)

Longroute (19394) 2010-03-18 7:41
Great work Carlos,
at first sight this place looks like a cathedral! so golden and so shining with light and one might even see some pipe organ in bg! I never imagined such a orderly station in NY. I only saw the coach station there and it was quite another thing. I'm really admired here for the excellent sharpness, not so easy to obtain in interior environments. And I also like the perfect symmetrical composition which highlights the harmonoius proportions of this architecture.
An outstanding result and a very fine photo.
leonorkuhn (16235) 2010-03-18 20:31
