Photographer’s Note

Until the late 1950s the lumber companies would float logs harvested from the Adirondack Mountains down to the paper mills in Glens Falls, NY. In narrow spots like this the logs would often jam which required brave men to stand on the logs and seperate them with long pikes. This was very dangerous work that often caused loss of life. These brave lumberjacks were well paid but unfortunately much of the money ended up in the local Saloons.
