The famous lions guarding the entrance were sculpted by Edward Clark Potter. They were originally named Leo Astor and Leo Lenox, in honor of the library's founders. These names were transformed into Lord Astor and Lady Lenox (although both lions are male). In the 1930s they were nicknamed "Patience" and "Fortitude" by Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia. Patience is on the south side (the left as one faces the main entrance) and Fortitude on the north.

Los famosos leones que guardan la entrada fueron esculpidos por Edward Clark Potter. Originalmente los nombraron Leo Astor y Leo Lenox, en honor de los fundadores de la biblioteca. Estos nombres fueron transformados en Señor Astor y Señora Lenox (aunque ambos leones son masculinos). En los años 30 fueron apodados “paciencia” y “fortaleza” (o valor) por el alcalde Fiorello LaGuardia. Paciencia está en el lado sur (a la izquierda cuando uno mira de frente a la entrada principal) y Fortaleza en el lado norte.
