Satellite Photo on Google of the place where I took this photo.
This photo was taken from the Jersey City, across the Hudson river. What we see over here is the Financial District in Manhattan, NYC.
Due to the excessive air traffic around this place I had to wait quite a while in order to get a clear sky in order not to get any light trails from the planes and helicopters, although I did get one light trail from a ferry on the river.
For another photo with some light trails taken from the same place you can check the workshop. I think we tend to capture a rare moment in the photos and since there was so much air traffic around this place, I wanted a clear sky. NYC has one of the busiest and the most complex air space in the world.
The Financial District is the neighborhood in New York City on the southernmost section of the island of Manhattan which comprises the offices and headquarters of many of the city's major financial institutions, including the New York Stock Exchange.
There are some apartments in the financial district too, although all of them should be priced more than a million dollor (my guess from the kind of people I saw living in them). Never in my life had I seen soo many rich people all buched together and living in such a small area. Lots of moolah over here.
My note was party retrived from Wikipedia.

Hi Sarju, You certainly have done an excellent job here in taking this long exposure picture. The city standing out impressively between the blue sky and blue river water here. The river wave was smoothed out with the long exposure effect. Good to have the moon as a contrast to the bright city lights. Well done.
leo1 (139) 2005-12-09 20:25
what a nice picture with a full moon above the lights, excellent
Clairedelune (4923) 2005-12-09 22:07
Night pictures are always attractive to me. Maybe because I like nights in themselves. Your blue color here is very beautiful. And, I guess you will not be surprised, I like moonlight. ;-) I think that picture could have been just a bit sharper. In fact, the one you post in the workshop is actually sharper than this one. So, I try something that I will post as a workshop. I hope it will not be a total mess as I'm not so good with post processing and the result once posted in the web. Hope also that you don't mind! To wait for doing the picture you want is a very good attitude. The one of a real photographer. Cheers!
Claire... de lune!
singuanti (15250) 2005-12-09 23:12
Hi Sarju. Yes when I was there I really wanted to be able to get a night shot like this but it never worked out. As much fun as the light trails are I think I prefer this one. I like the glow on the water. Perhaps you could have sharpened it a hair more. Noise is impressively low. Very nice shot Sarju!!
wallie (110) 2005-12-10 1:40
Great moody and nice coloured picture and sharp. I like it. Well done and tfs.
rosiegirl (1596) 2005-12-10 1:48
The blue colors in the sky and water are the perfect night shades- not pitch black, but you still know the day is winding down. The moonlight is lovely, and I love the small streak of light under it- it looks like a shooting star, but most likely just a plane. Great city-scape; for some reason at this distance, you made the buildings seem not so imposing. Good work.
vincent24 (9060) 2005-12-10 3:30
I'am fan of that hind of picture, you have a nice blue tone may be due to the moon,i also like the WS version, thanks for sharing,
Deepforest (9260) 2005-12-10 7:01
very nice picture of Manhattan with moon. Interesting composition, nice colours.
john_c (24662) 2005-12-10 11:45
A well composed shot of the Manhattan skyline. I like the tones and hues of blue dominating the scene and the moon's slightly veiled appearance. Good reflected light on the water further enhances. An interesting contribution to TE from a different perspective. Well done, Sarju.
jhm (139972) 2005-12-10 11:47
I find your WS absolutely not bad! The big city with are enlightenment of the buildings between the Hudson river and the blue sky give a nice composition.
Greetings from Belgium.
riclopes (35577) 2005-12-10 14:42
And you get that blue sky, just before the evening!
The POV is fabulous (I think I never went to Jersey city...) and the shot is very well taken. I loved your note about the waiting of a clear sky and river. Sometimes, we got into some funny situations, to get the perfect shot (but here, you just had a perfect sight).
The softness of the river surface is wonderful and the waiting was worth it. It enhances the view of that magnific skyline. But I also like the result of the one in ws and the ws of Claire really improved the sharpness of this one (I still get amazed with what can be done in ws...)
Congratulations for the good work and thanks for sharing it,
Have a nice weekend,
capthaddock (28790) 2005-12-10 15:02
Hi Sarju - wow, stunningly beautiful, the waterfront skyline is enough to make a great shot, the moon adds a special touch. I just wish the clouds had cleared enough to give a sharp circular disc.
rosaline (0) 2005-12-10 17:07
I missed this one when it came out. Nice cityscape and done before it got too dark, not always possible for me! I like the composition and the colours are quite nice. Good blue sky to add extra colour to the picture.
maphoto (8082) 2005-12-10 17:27
Very well executed Sarju, I like both photos, I hope you used a tripod...unless you have very very steady hands :-) The light is nice, the colorful soft three layers is very pleasant and contrast nicely. Great presnetation of N.Y. City, well seen.
greg64g (11193) 2005-12-11 2:37
Great view again, the colors and the pov are amazing, that's a superb work, and i must say that i like the Ws clairdelune proposed you.
feather (51130) 2005-12-11 8:39
Lovely night shot Sarju, taken early enough to have the blue sky. I love the way long exposure smooths water into a silky sheen. I looked at your WS with the plane trails and agree they don't add anything to the composition ( I had expected them to look better )Excellent note too
UlfE (14641) 2005-12-11 14:25
Wonderful night picture. Clear weather is always the for taking a photo. Fantastic composition with the blue sky and blue water and Manhattan in the middle. Superb job my friend.
Rinie_Hoff (9340) 2005-12-11 14:56
Hi Sarju, I love this shot of the skyline of NY. The thing is that I still do not recognize the skyline without the twin towers. I really have to make a study of it. Nice bright picture, Sarju, but I also like your workshop very much.
Stepan (27210) 2005-12-12 2:21
Impressive light and blue atmosphere... So urban !
The layers in the compo work well.
Good dof too.
hdl (6995) 2005-12-12 7:28
Hi Sarju. I also like the WS; quite interesting result you get with the long exposure time. The moon is certainly the eyecatcher in the shot, otherwise groundlevel is carefully balanced. Nice colours, maybee ad a little sharpening.
xavshot (69835) 2005-12-12 12:39
Superbe photo de nuit Sarju !
je suis impressionné par les couleurs que tu as obtenu. C'est une belle prise de vue. Les 15 secondes d'exposition ont permis d'avoir également un superbe rendu de l'eau
elihesamian (26149) 2005-12-12 14:20
What a nice brillianr night shot ! woww Sarju!
A very attractive and nice work with a fine result, great colors and contrast, well amnaged the light and very well captured, and in a fine way composed, too, beautiful, calm and placid like the "night"!

Magnifica cena nocturna! gosto das cores e do enquadramento!
Tue (27696) 2005-12-12 17:33
Great shot of the skyline and the many small lights. The moon works also very well here. I like the smooth water surface in front. Good work!
PJE (20758) 2005-12-12 19:48
I would say this is a wonderful photo here Sarju! Nice detail and color as well. The best time is twilight for such a capture! Glad to be back on TE!
PixelTerror (0) 2005-12-13 6:14
I know it's difficult to take photos at night in NY, and your WS shows one of the problems, the other one being the extraordinary amount of polluting light sources to be found there. You avoided that one choosing here a remote location and it works well, the moon shining over the city is very nice too. Claire gave you the final polishing step, nothing to add, just enjoy :-)
Have a nice day,
cessy (13647) 2005-12-13 8:38
wow, what a wonderful manhattan
very very nice, Sarju
the blue sky, the blue water, the moon, the lights on the city, all are excellent
your workshop also wonderful
toni_al (15875) 2005-12-13 18:20
Une nouvelle et jolie image de la grande pomme. J'aurais juste coupe un peu l'eau et pris plus de ciel. Très bon cadrage
Kenny10pin (19301) 2005-12-13 20:59
interesting shot, I like the light and also the buildings are very well taken, the focus is all there
chaity (1539) 2005-12-14 4:17
Hi Sarju, I like the lighting and the city illuminated. Photo consider sharp for a night photo.
PLD_images (7149) 2005-12-14 7:38
Bonjour mon ami,
A really good shot of the skyline of New-York. I love the moon in the frame, it adds a lot to the composition. I have never been to NY city, but I will certainly go one day. It's such a great place for photography.
Have a good one - Paul
rajhema (1871) 2005-12-15 14:13
Spectacular night shot Sarju.
svo555 (1028) 2005-12-15 16:00
Great photo Sarju!
I love this city!
You captured good lighting and also nice saturated colours.
fabio_ts (13694) 2005-12-16 8:04
A really well done picture Sarju, a splendid skyline with the plus of the full moon... GREAT!!!
have a nice week end,
danielswalsh (13599) 2005-12-18 8:51
My appologies for not stopping by in a while. I've been quite busy over the past month with my brothers wedding (me, being the best man and all)- that I have neglected my TE reposnibilities- hahaha....
Nice to see another shot of NY, but it does somewhat make me sad, not being able to see those two magnificent towers anymore.
A like the exposure you managed here, as you were able to capture some of the remaining light in the sky while also getting a good exposure of the city.
Nice work Sarju!
ChristianS (2997) 2005-12-18 9:46
Beautiful cityscape so nicely caught between the dark blue sea and the blue sky. I like this kind of night shots with myriads of lights, showing the big city in all its majesty. The moon is a nice addition and I like how its soft light reflects on the water. Well done!
dipak (255) 2005-12-18 18:40
Excellent work with the exposure setting. It looks like the city is hanging in blue!
Well done boss.
rabdelnoor (3421) 2005-12-19 19:23
Sorry the delay in comment your photos. I have been away for about a month. The New York skyline is a very popular subject here in TE, but you got a fine result in your shot. The long exposure worked very well rendering a well balanced photo with intense and beautiful colors. I liked also your WS with the light trails.
ArtLook (2348) 2005-12-20 0:58
This view on New York City is really wonderful. I like the lights of skysrcrapes and moon above them. Nice blue colors of sky and water. mVery good shot, BRAVO!
PS: Merry Christmas to you!
With BEST regards,
jafadabret (56501) 2005-12-27 13:38
La nuit devait être bien noire pour une pose de 15 secondes et une ouverture de 5,6. C'est vrai qu'on se croirait presque en plein jour.
La photo est très belle et l'eau paraît figée.
C'est du très bon travail !
jbweasle (9373) 2006-01-02 4:01
Hello Sarju, this is a wonderful night shot with colour and detail. But is is of course the moon that makes it special.
Paolo (41222) 2006-01-09 12:01
Hi Sarju, good shot with a poerfect exposure to have so many light over Manhattan!
good light and reflection, good colours and a fantastic POV!
excellent also the note.
thanks, and happy new year.
Henryk_Bilor (20799) 2006-01-14 16:58
Beautiful image. Great lights of buildings.
And the moon... I must admit that today I`ve try to do a photo of the moon over dunes, but I couldn`t be up to do it right.
annagrace (2467) 2006-01-15 22:42
A beautiful image, the water is much more blue than in real life but perhaps that is due to the long exposure. Straight to my favs, Sarju!
aloyho (6798) 2006-01-20 7:20
The long exposure really did some wonders here as I am able to see the faint clouds against the nice blue sky and the fierce moon casting its rays on the water surface. Its a beautiful add as it definately change the whole atmosphere of this place. Wonderful shot!! Have a nice day.
rakeshgupta (2672) 2006-02-22 11:02
Great view of Manhattan. This type of view I have seen at many camera sites making the ISO testing. But I can say your this picture is better than those of testing.
Good capture of lighting.
Thanks for sharing this great composition.
elBud (2237) 2006-03-13 11:20
great picture, the never sleep city, i love the blue sky and the great full moon, beautiful.
amstel (2388) 2006-03-22 18:20
What can I say - I'm impressed!
faz09 (32) 2006-04-16 15:39
Hey Sarju, excellent photo. I was just in the same site you must have taken this photo from. I unfortuatley forgot to pack my tripod, again, so I had to do with the hotel room balcony. I love your shot. Did you do something the get the blue in the shot? My shots all turn out natural colors. I think the sharpness is excellent. Great job and keep up the good work!
JasPahal (336) 2006-06-06 4:03
I'm moving there in August my friend.. Got into NYU and will be there for 4 years!
This pic is beautiful - nicely composed and not too much noise, especially for the long exposure. Informative note as well.
KUBA85 (41) 2008-02-26 5:59
Nice place;and also very good city I hope I'll have been in that city...
altough the building looks nice over the moonlight from the cirusstratüs cloud...
