When the snow starts to melt, there are lots of big puddles to play with. :-) Since I love reflections, I was looking down at all the puddles as I walked along Fifth Avenue. People were wondering why I was photographing the dirty sidewalk, but all we have to do is change our perspective to get a whole different reality, or, in this case, a winter fantasy. :-)
The Flatiron Building was behind me on 23rd Street, and Madison Square Park was to my right. Just a few blocks ahead, at 34th Street, was the Empire State Building. You can see the ESB peaking out from behind another building on the right side of this photo.
Add a passerby in a red coat, and some dirty snow, and a New York City winter fantasy is born.

i also like reflections, especially when they are creative as in this scene! It is interesting to see ESB from a puddle(first time for me) It was also a good idea to include a person in the shot to bring more life to this cold scene. A very good picture, just one bad thing about this shot: I don`t like snow:)

that is amazing! I couldn't believe that these are just reflections of real things. It almost looks like some kind of modern painting with the shapes slightly blurred but still recognizable. Well done for this original approach and lovely presentation.
Thanks for sharing

Great graphical effect.

la ripresa è geniale e ha dato forma ad una fotografia nella quale gli effetti speciali sono ottenuti con mezzi del tutto naturali.
Anche i colori sono molto piacevoli e la composizione, apparentemente disordinata, in realtà appare ben studiata.
Ciao e buona giornata

I really love this photo, it's brilliant. The colors are superb and the street has given the features a fine texture. I would love to see a large size verion of this hanging on a wall in a gallery. It has the qualities of a work of art.

Why fight the slush and puddles when one can use them to produce such a terrific photo. The little bits of muted colour add so smartly to the effect too. Well done!

I like this kind of inverted reflections, the structure of the motive becomes very much like a painting (in water colours!) The man in red jacket is a clear eye-catcher and the skyline behind him is very attractive.

Wow! NYC in a puddle!
Excellently composed. Beautiful colours.
Very well observed.
Best regards, Paul

You're a genius with reflects and yo have created such amazing worlds with your vision. In still remember fondly the mannequin reflectn shot I discovered in your gallery which gave me a whole new way of seeing the world. This is likewise, a fleeting of new York in a melted snow puddle, appearing like a grainy film scene, so appearing like another time.
Thanks as always for sharing.

great work done here, with fantastic observation.this is artistic.like the elements here.
macjake (70995) 2014-02-27 20:54
so you inverted this photo? i think so right?
I guess you would have to if you want the people and buildings to be standing correctly upright.
Not to worry about people looking at you photographing the ground, I'm sure there are other stranger things in NY! lol
My favorite was your photo of...i think it was the Cookie Monster walking the sidewalk? was that yours?
that was so funny!
good for you to look out for these, keeping your eyes wide open. see you around!

Brilliant composition and execution. The reflection of the man, with his red coat providing color highlight is especially useful. Your note with the precise location is a gem — "The Flatiron Building behind me... Madison Square Park to my right..."
Warm regards (and I do hope it begins to warm up after this latest spell of Arctic air).

Now what kind of weirdo takes pictures of a dirty sidewalk....oh yeah, we do! :) Just more proof that not everyone has a vision to see and create compelling imagery such as this.
What a super observation, and perfect timing to have caught this man wearing red...making a strong point within this scene, but not necessarily stealing the show. I absolutely love the gritty, grainy texture and abstract kind of appeal...as you mention, very fantasy like. Making the best out of an otherwise "dirty" situation, and one that doesn't last long on the streets. The miserable winter conditions still have their silver linings, and you found a bright one...love it! Enjoy the rest of the weekend. Take care.
You've been walloped with snow and freezing temps this year, and we just had out first rain in 2 1/2 months...and you would have thought it was the end of the world around here!? Crazy desert dwellers. lol

Best regards, PIli

I like reflection, too.
It is a case of looking at things differently!
Your puddle photograph is a great success.
It has all the elements we would expect from a 'natural' shot but they are expressed in a very arty, almost impressionistic way.
You see, the red-coated gentlemen wouldn't even know that you were photographing him!
Thanks for sharing this,

Merci d'être venu faire un petit tour dans ma galerie , ce qui me donne l'opportunité de visiter la tienne. Beaucoup d'imagination et une très belle technique comme ici.

This picture was very creatively composed. It's really like a piece of Impressionist painting. I really like it.
abmdsudi (57140) 2014-03-14 22:42
Superb imagination- brings a whole new meaning to puddles and melting snow! This is stunningly imaginative, using the reflection this way round gives a beautiful dreamy quality to the image, it is so well balanced with the eye popping guy and the buildings nicely in place in the puddle.
Beautiful to just sit, look at and great title too definitely would pass for an impressionist painting, an image with an icy and vertiginous feel to it which conveys the description perfectly, the soft colours and clarity work so well. Credit that you have certainly exploited the limited space for max impact, an alluring shot excellently done :)) Congrats
clic (17883) 2014-03-17 8:30
This work of yours could be classified as 'abstract expressionism' and sold for much money to connoisseurs!
You dared something different for a pulling attraction that, I hope, will 'make youngs' on TE!!
COSTANTINO (68140) 2014-03-21 8:58
what a beautiful photo incredible indeed
nice idea with this snowy composition
a shot with reflections interesting details
and as you say people were wondering
why you was taking photos from the dirty
sidewalk thats the originality and the art
the art has no border
I could say its a modern painting
have a nice weekend

What a super reflection and to include the Empire State Building, a bonus.
Love the guy and his pose,
fotka (4659) 2014-03-25 7:42
Wow, indeed it is very good reflection that shows buildings and person. The colors turned very nicely.
Well done job!

Looks like a painting! I like the composition a lot, with such a nice reflection. The man with the red coat is perfect and very well placed among the buildings. Really well seen!
annjackman (21901) 2014-04-19 2:20
This is an unusual and creative reflection and I love the way that the man in the red jacket is passing between the buildings. The dirt and texture of the pavement gives a gritty impression which I like very much.
Very well observed and taken picture of New York.
Kind Regards, Ann

it was here on TE where I learnt to love reflections. Here you have captured very interesting reflections. Very good management of the light and an excellent perspective. I also enjoyed reading the notes. My compliments!
