Photographer's Note

When people think of Fifth Avenue, they think about expensive shops in the heart of Manhattan, but that is only one aspect of this famous street.

Depending on where in Manhattan you are, the character of Fifth Avenue changes. It begins just north of Washington Square Park in Greenwich Village, and runs north, all the way to Harlem.

In Greenwich Village and Chelsea, there are more casual stores and restaurants. As you move north to midtown, there are the business skyscrapers and fancy shops. Then along Central Park West, you have several of the top NYC museums. Finally, you reach Harlem, which has more low-rise apartments and modest places to shop and eat.

Taking a city bus along Fifth Avenue is a nice way to see many of the city's most famous sights. Some of them from south to north are: The Flatiron Building, The Empire State Building (seen in this photo), the main branch of the NY Public Library, Rockefeller Center, St. Patrick's Cathedral, Central Park, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Guggenheim Museum.
