This scene was captured while walking across the Brooklyn Bridge. The tall building you see in the background is one i've posted here on TE, the New Gehry Building - the one made of stainless steel on the outside.
I don't usually include people in my photo's but i thought this time it suited the scene well.
To add a little bit more info, i must thank Brenda (worldcitizen) who i met while in NY. She let me know that the other tall building in this scene (the black one in the middle-left) is part of the new construction of the "new" World Trade Centers.
Thanks for looking.

Wow, what a great shot in B&W!!! The BG is so amazing that seems unreal! I like the atmopshere, always busy in NY.
batalay (38591) 2012-01-25 7:14
You've achieved a 40s-50s style image, the crowd milling about on the great bridge. The buildings might not all be the same (there are more skyscrapers, but the general spectrum of he skyline is similar. In the older photos, the men might be waring hats (something that JFK killed off by rejecting the style). It's a wonderful, timeless shot. The vertical format you've chosen works perfectly.

another cool NYC image Craig.
I have never set foot on the Brooklyn Bridge even though i have been to Manhattan a fair few times now :-(
It was on my need to do list this time (just back this morning) but time constraints pushed it down the list... All i want is the classic shot, nothing fancy and i cannot even get that in the bag.
I love the inky blacks here complemented by the subtle greys.
snunney (97477) 2012-01-25 7:21
A well constructed composition blending architecture wit daily life. I like the use of black and white, which gives a retro feel to the shot. The image has a good range of tonal contrast and excellent sharpness.
TopGeo (38216) 2012-01-25 7:24
Hello Craig! Very impressive as old time photo!, very impressive bridge, outstanding architecture photo overall! Great POV, framing and composition, excellent perspective! Great light management, wonderful B&W, great sharpness and definition! Very impressive photo from a beautiful place! Excellent use of the bridge frameand contrast!
CLODO (33984) 2012-01-25 7:47
we're part of the bunch of persons (who gave you the idea?) wandering on the bridge to admire the NY panorama, mainly with the vertical lines of the sky scrappers.
B&W suits well.
holmertz (51148) 2012-01-25 8:09
Including people suits a lot of scenes very well :-). Since you're so choosy on this matter I must say this was a very suitable time for a rare exception. The little crowd create a fine foreground and the high-rise background looks terrific. The New Gehry building has some very interesting patterns. The well processed sky looks great too.
wolf38 (31296) 2012-01-25 9:22
Hi craig. The classic black and white is a good alternative to the colored images. Sometimes you have to put both versions side by side and compare which works better. Your photo has certainly more dramatic than a colored version. In black and white image, everything is reduced to the essentials. You've made a good choice. Rgds, Wolfgang.

Very nice shot, with a good choice for the black and white.
Jeppo (17645) 2012-01-25 12:01
people fit like a glove to the black and white compo.
Nard (6972) 2012-01-25 12:26
I like this B&W picture that looks like a 50's picture. Sky, building, people and the diagonale made by the part of the bridge are very nice items for the composition and well captured in a good framing.
francio64 (39888) 2012-01-25 13:25
ottimo trattamento in bianco e nero che fa sembrare la foto come se essa è stata scattata 50 anni fa.
Buono il formato verticale e ben gestite le luci.

Great post of this interesting scene. Perfectly cropped with an awesome city view and its architecture in the background. Superb idea to present it in b&w version. Like it very much.

Superb B&W composition with lovely light management and beautiful gray tones, wonderful scene and view to the NY, excellent POV, very nice details, TfS!

This is dashing urban capture with a fab and well balanced juxtapo of the people and their hyperurban context. Timing is very good and the lineplay too. The set of greys and their distribution over the frame is great and the crispness spot on.
I see a very inspired and good eye and fine tech skills here.
And: thanx for your kind words about my work!
Best regards from Rotterdam,

Impressive black and white picture!
mauro61 (52855) 2012-01-25 14:57
buona la conversione in B&W con una bela forza data all'immagine dalla tonalità e dal gioco di ombre.
worldcitizen (8470) 2012-01-25 15:11
I was looking at this photo for a while. I finally realized that we can't really tell that it's the Brooklyn Bridge without your note, but that doesn't make any difference. The POV is really nice, and I like the view of both the new Gehry building, and One World Trade Center rising beside it. Good action in the foreground, too.
npecanhuk (74814) 2012-01-25 16:43
Wonderful NYC picture!
Black & white, vertical format, exposure, slim black borders, chosen pov and, above all, composition are all oustanding features here and I loved them all & everything!
TFS - congrats,

I'm a fan of black and white and this is gorgeous, with a sky so you could not have made a better choice, beautiful framing and depth that allows us to appreciate the wonderful graphics of skyscrapers, beautiful scene, unlike you I appreciate the human presence in my shots, I am indeed a lover of the portraits,
greeting from India,

Un bon noir et blanc new-yorkais associant de belle façon architecture et habitants.
emka (95113) 2012-01-25 23:57
Great photo in b&w.The people suit the picture very wel, enliven the scene. You found wonderful POV, showing the Gehry building, the new WTC and part oc Brooklyn Bridge.

you are master of sensations! outstanding b&w masterpiece. just fantastic sharpness, excellent dof!
mkamionka (35820) 2012-01-26 0:51
I like it very much, hard to say why.
May be because it is so busy, I love busy compositions. There is the crowd yet they don't disturb don't hide anything -just opposite they provide an interesting foreground. The view of the skyscrapers is amazing and the line of the bridge provides such an interesting curve cutting the view.
Great idea with B&W. It does have a feeling of an old photograph yet of course with fantastic quality.
Excellent work, very well spotted,
dkmurphys (57450) 2012-01-26 1:08
Impressive city. This bw photo turns us back in the glorious time of America. Well seen, fine idea.
timecapturer (49288) 2012-01-26 3:50
this is a winner! I love the composition and the use of B&W is inspired here. It looks like a 1950's shot of NYC but with nice new modern architecture. I think that is why it has such impact. Executed flawlessly and presented creatively and beautifully. One of your best and a superb addition to your fine gallery.
Enjoy your day - Brian.
tyro (24348) 2012-01-26 4:59
See how much popular a picture becomes when it includes the "human element"!
A wonderful picture which works very well in monochrome and which is really a picture of two parts, very cleverly divided by the bold supporting cable of the bridge. The upper part is classical of your style with beautifully clear and sharp and detailed skyscrapers while the lower part is of wonderful human interest, people sitting, people talking, people nejoying the view of the city.

A superb image of the city with a POV sensational, with all these people in the foreground, the image becomes very much alive, I love the effect of B & W in this scene, the sky is about shades of gray ideal, perfect the magnificence of the building Gehry can not remember from when I visit the city in May 2010.
Great job, I love it.
Most cordial greetings.
RhodieIke (11744) 2012-01-26 13:23
Hi Craig, Love this people scene with the fantastic Bg, of NY. Awesome in B&W,Great to see living things in your latest photo's. Tfs, Cheers Iain.
Ps, I am experimenting with HDR, It's a free on-line one Photomatix, it has a water mark on so can't be shared, what do you use?
delpeoples (57278) 2012-01-26 23:15
Now this is a bit of a turn for the books, you've certainly pulled something different out of your hat with a people/landscape shot. Love the choice of B&W and the choice to include people in the crop. The clouds are pretty magical too, so that's yet another great element added to the mix.
I've read with interest your discussion with John and couldn't agree more with you both. Shooting people terrifies me too, as I've said before ad nauseum. But as you say, photos of kids are even more terrifying. I'm always worried about rabid parents or looking like a seedy peedy. I understand the concerns and the need to be protective, but the world's gone a little mad. At my godson's kindy Christmas pantomine we were banned from bringing in cameras. Ridiculous!
Anyway, thanks for this photo, I'm so glad that you're branching out.
Thanks for sharing, have a lovely day
PS: I'm shooting a wedding tomorrow - am terrified.

Have a nice weekend.
SWEETFREEDOM (24617) 2012-01-28 1:53
fantastic daily life scene, excellent b/w with perfect contrast and light
josepmarin (58357) 2012-01-28 3:55
though you do not usually include people in your captures, I believe that in this case it was a good idea, because it provides a fantastic contrast between the dynamism and the vitality of the foreground in the Brooklyn Bridge, and the impressive architecture of the tall buildings in background. It is interesting to see the new Freedom Tower in a good state of construction.
The sky and the clouds have a good aesthetic level, and I wonder how they would be seen in color.
A great work, my friend.
brianmcc (6219) 2012-01-28 6:59
this is almost two pictures in one. the skyline is superb, great composition, wonderful contrast, fantastic patterns and drama in the sky and clouds. then, under the curved metal of the bridge we have a street scene, very busy and bustling with activity. great composition. fantastic sharpness.
have a good weekend,

I think BW is the best way to shoot NYC. Amazing shot, good to include people
i9l2y1m8a8t3 (4814) 2012-01-30 7:53
A sleek composition! Love the dynamism and the busyness of the image. The conversion to B&W format worked out very well in here! Well composed, as usual! Fantastic work!
Ninello52 (7576) 2012-01-30 12:57
A black and white very, very fascinating! Masterfully composed image with the people in the foreground and the structure of the bridge that cuts the graphics of skyscrapers! Excellent definition, pretty light too! Congratulations!
Best regards, Nino.

This a nice daily life image which has been posted in B&W with a great impact.

Hello Craig - I love this shot, it is reminiscent of Berenice Abbott's 1930's black and white DL/architectural images of New York but the people and some of the buildings very much of the times we live in. A strong and very successful shot. For my money, the architectural city-scape and people work very well together thanks to your strong composition and neatly divided canvas. Best regards Rosemary

Good contrast and exposure under a strong light.

Beautiful young people on the Brooklyn Bridg in the foreground.
Impressive buildings in the background.
Fantastic cloudy sky.
Nice set of fine-tecture and contrast.
Excellent photos elegant composed.
Nice black & white impression.
Angshu (56750) 2012-02-13 6:24
The B&W suits this very well! I could identify the Gehry building at first sight...your earlier post had introduced me with this building. The diagonal of the cable works well. The human interest here, I may dare say is not essential or adds to the scene...without them, IMHO, this picture would have been just as 'lively'
jmdias (63370) 2012-02-22 15:39
I hope one day to visit NY and find the new WTC building done.very beautiful details of the buildings, the personages enjoying the moment and the mood of the compo. nice use of black and white.
