This substantial art museum is actually the second largest in New York City, at 560,000 square feet. Its collections includes about 1.5 million objects. It was founded in 1895. This imposing structure was designed by McKim, Mead and White, and was intended to be the largest art museum in the world, but that didn't quite work out; it initially struggled somewhat but enjoyed quite a resurgence in the 20th century. Areas of the collection include antiquities, especially the world-famous Egyptian collection, African, Oceanic and Japanese art, as well as a vast collection of American works and a memorial sculpture garden, featuring salvaged architectural artifacts from throughout the city. Not to be missed if you're an art aficionado!
