During my first trip to the Watchung Reservation, I was surprised to see this lake. It was an awesome treat for a tourist like me.
The aptly named Lake Surprise, a quaint 25-acre lake, was a surprise to find in the midst of heavily populated towns. Located in a ravine within the 2,000-acre Watchung Reservation, hemlock and pine are interspersed with beech, maple, locust, and other hardwoods around the lake. The reservation hosts numerous activities, including horseback riding, hiking, an environmental activity center, a butterfly garden, picnic groves, and a planetarium. At 1.0-mile long and 100-feet wide, the lake will not provide a long paddle, but the setting is gorgeous—perfect for a quick trip at the end of a hectic day and ideal for the novice. Lake depth averages four feet, with a number of spots on the southwest end reaching eight feet. Painted and spotted turtles, butterflies, and birds are its main wildlife. Miles of hiking trails take you up and down mountainous terrain, where you’re likely to encounter deer, fox, and skunk.

What a suprise to see lake suprise again! Looks like a familiar place.
You really composed this one so well Kaye. I remember the day, it was grey with little sun, but you managed to show a colorful landscape. I love the whole thing, foreground with the mud, leaves, and log. The water shows movement from the slight wind coming from the East, and the beautiful trees just starting to change color.
It's a much different scene now for sure. I'll try to get a photo of the same spot this coming weekend when I go see Mom & Dad.
Warm regards,
Brian
