Old Casino Asbury Park

This is the interior of the boardwalk casino in Asbury Park, New Jersey. Gambling was legal at one time, and apparently this place really was a palace, according to the locals. To the left, they said there was an upper level skating rink and if you wnt into another section to the right, an antique carousel.
I went up to shoot on a Sunday morning and they were having some kind of flea market in the upstairs of one of the buildings next to it on the boardwalk, so there were a lot of people around. I mention this because if anyone ever goes there and the casino happens to be unlocked (it usually isn't) do not go in there alone! Asbury Park, once a bustling boardwalk and the gem of the Jersey Shore, now looks like someone dropped the bomb on it. It is probably the bleakest, most desolate place I have ever seen (with my limited experience) and what few people you see on a normal day tend to be rather unsavory. BTW, if you rent "City by the Sea" with Robert deNiro, this building and the boardwalk are prominently featured.
I've heard Asbury Park nicknamed "Sarajevo by the Sea" and believe me, the nickname fits. It had a tremendous impact on me and it's become a much greater metaphor for me on a personal level.
And yes, Bruce has played in Asbury Park many times, although I don't know about this casino. But it's very near the famous Stone Pony where Springsteen got his start. I have a better apprectiation for the bleakness of his music after visiting here. |

Another great capture! The reflection from the wet floor and just the mammoth size of the building makes this an excellent photo! Very powerful!
Welcome Diana, great picture.
Makes me want to know more about the casino's history. Was there ever legal gambling in Asbury Park? Did Bruce play there?
The reflection in the water works very well to fill in the middle of the shot.
When I first looked at this picture I though it was a bit crooked. But now I think you might have been standing a little off to one side. That causes the windows to tilt slightly downward to the right, exposes more of the beam at the top on the right than the left.
Perhaps a tiny perspective tweak in PS?
This one is wonderful too... I love the contrasts in B&W&Grays & shapes!
Très belle photo, le noir et blanc donne un très bon rendu, la ligne de séparation entre reflet et réel montre les 2 vies de cet endroit, BRAVO!

A really great shot of an abandoned place. The reflection from the waater on the floor adds to that feeling. B&W gives it a documentary look and feel.

Fine b&w work. Wonderful silhouettes, reflective light and lines.
