[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
One of the mainstays of Latvian folk tradition is the celebration of summer solstice. The custom goes back to pre-christian times. I guess, we (Latvians) still have some "pagan bone" inside us since the solstice is an event celebrated on a much larger scale than Christmas. The whole ordeal involves singing, dancing, special solstice cheese, beer, and, of course, a huge bonfire.

Latvian expats abroad cannot do without this tradition either. Every year, around solstice time, a few hundred of expats and their descendants gather in the woods of New Hampshire. This photo is a dedication to the centerpiece of this year's gathering. Hope you like the warmth of it.

Regards,
Kristaps

ps. here is another photo from the same place taken by avene a bit earlier in the evening of solstice celebration.

i also posted a broader view of the same place and event in a workshop photo.

Hi Kristaps,

excellent grafism! I like the crop used, emphasizing the burning woods and their reds and yellows. Great shot!

Hi Kristaps
Many places in Italy have traditions very similar to the one you describe in your note, involving great bonfires!
Your picture is very nice, exposure, colors and composition are perfect!

Hello Kristaps

It's an amazing composition. It looks like the hell !
Very good framed.

Cheers.

Karine

Hi Kristaps,

clear, sharp, colourful image. It´s good to see something red in the gallery dominated by blue and green..

Thanks chris

Hi Kristaps,
Interesting composition made with the logs in this well chosen square format. The fire is very well captured here, although we see only a part of it.
It is also interesting to see how the colour is changing from black to bright red on the top.
Vedrana

Kristaps,
with this picture one would have to believe that this is a "serious" fest for the Latvians!
and of course, pre-christian.:)
Sometimes, when I tell my foreign friends about the fact that we still celebrate a lot of pre-christian holidays, and that they ARE important for us, my friends don't believe me.
I will send them to your page next time!:)
Did I tell you it's a very beautiful picture? :)
Cheers,
Olga

Hi Kristaps

great shot, nice composed, and the tight crop works well. Good exposure shwoing lots of details in the glowing embers.

Derek

Hi Kristaps,

amazing picture!! I have tried so many times, actually with good result, to take pictures of fires...but they are look the same, there is nothing special about them. Your posting is unique..I never seen something like this before. The arrangement of the logs are really nice, the richness of details and of course the beautyful colors of fire makes this one a excellent "warm" composition.

Regards

Rolando

Hi Kristaps,
Your very dramatic bonfire photo popped up in random and I could not resist it. It makes me wonder about your POV and/or the size of the bonfire to achieve such a perspective. The note adds interesting details. The link is good; Avene's photo is an amazing contrast and her note compliments yours.

Hi Kristaps,
There is something so premitive about a roaring fire that we cannot help but stare and this one is no exception with its varying shades of gold and yellow crackling and lapping at these charcoal stained logs. Excellent sharpness and details to this lovely bonfire.
