[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Crawford Notch is the main passage through the center of the White Mountains. The Saco River flows southeast and the Wild Ammonoosuc flows northwest from the height of land (1900'). NH Rt 302 runs throught the narrow notch, as do train tracks (you can see the old train depot station on the right). The old depot is now a shop run by the Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC). The notch was the site of the old Crawford House, a large White Mountains hotel that was destroyed by fire in the 1970s. Insted, The Highland Center, operated by the AMC, is the newest four-season lodge on site. It is an ideal starting point for day hikes, paddling, snowshoe treks, and longer backcountry trips in the White Mountains. This picture was taken from a window on the second floor of the Highland Center.
