This was shot at noon to take advantage of the shadows under the clap boards. I have been trying to shoot white churches with low angle sun but it comes out hot and with low detail sometimes. Today at lunch I tried this and am pleased with the results and looking forward to your comments. In addition to the stark mid day lighting I also find the lines awkward. Here the center front wall axis is vertical but standing below the foundation looking up does present a challenge. I was also pleased that this one had angles that did not include a lot of electrical wiring overhead.

This building was built in 1788 though the congregation was organized in 1743. The building has been in continuous use and is in remarkable condition.

This is on State Highway 10 on the south side of Southampton.

Great angle, perspective and composition on this church. The colors, particularly the greens and blues, are especially good.

I really like all your architecture images.

The white of the church itself is a bit muddy. The RGB numbers are generally only about 200 over the brightest areas of it.

I added a 'Selective Color' adjustment layer and adjusted just the white to a -30 black value. That brightens those whites right up. Of course, some detail is lost but not much.

You might want to try that out to see what you think.

Helo Greg
One very beautiful church in Southampton and very clear image

Hi Greg,
The perspective brought you strong fallen lines, but when you correct this the building is not the building anymore because the lines in front on the right are different than the lines in the back on the left. Keeping it like this is the best way to keep the perspective in tact and because you were pretty close it brings a kind of dynamic feeling in to the image.
Good work on the exposure, not so easy to make with all that white...
Regards, Henk

Your posts really just continue to get better and better. I love this low pov!! The church is very well cared for, and framed beautifully! TFS

Hello Greg,

Exceptional pov to give this church a feeling of grandeur whilst capturing as much detail as possible.

The light is wonderful giving enough shadow to help define the edges and contours. The building is really clearly shown against the bright blue sky.

Kind regards,
Bev :-)

Hi Greg,
Beautiful architectural shot once more with fine composition, the quality is great. I like the attractive contrast between the blue sky and the white church. The details are very nice and the atmosphere is calm. Beautiful shot, Congratulations.
Have a nice day
George

hello Greg,
for a while now I've wanted to create a little series "white churches of New England", and I'll have to ask for your help in collecting the photos :)
it's tricky to shoot buildings if you want to show them in full. I've found that standing either directly in front of it and precisely in the middle, or precisey in front of the corner is the best way to have either symmetrically converging lines (like my Trump Tower photo), or have the best results in correcting the distortion. that said, I actually like the low/upward looking point of view.
another challange you had is the white colour - again something tricky to capture right. I usually experiment with exposure compensation on "+" side, but for me it's still a try-and-miss exercise :) here I like a lot that you have retained all the details of the textures, both on the white walls and on the dark shutters of the tower. but my favourite little element is the clock that shows 5 to 12, 5 minutes to something brand new ;)

with best regards,
Kristine

Hi Greg,
impressive light management (like Henk already said : far from easy with all that white) and a most appealing POV. A very carefully built shot, definitely a more than worthy addition to your already outstanding collection from NE.
Thanks for sharing!
Have a great weekend, I'll see ya soon.
Fulvio.

Greg,
the time of the day was perfect with that shadow of the roof perfectly giving the right contrast to the huge white wall also enhancing the ripples along the wall. The tree and shrub to the right are another valuable element to frame the huge white building.
Peter

bonjour, cette église est superbe de par sa caractéristique architecturale, blanche entièrement, bonne netteté et luminosité
un bon cadrage de celle-ci et j'aime sur la porte d'entrée ces deux couronnes, un symbole probablement?
bon week end
juliette

Hi Greg. Nikon have just released a tilt and shift lens that would be perfect for photographic situation like this, no more converging verticals. You just need deep pockets to cover the cost ;-(. I don’t mind the perspective, adds a little drama to the scene. And you’re right about powerlines also, than be difficult to avoid. Nice clean image with excellent clarity and good colours for midday sun. Thanks for sharing.
Cheers, Paul.

I think your pov here is great to capture the church in its best view. You also manage the exposure very well, i also wonder if this is a stitch shot.. Well done,.
Albert

Hi Greg. We feel small looking at this church because of this point of view. Colors are great and definition too. Well done. Paulo

Hi Greg
The whites project a lights reflexions on to give soft shades also.
Very nice picture, but I think it was not possible to get rid of the black piece in the low right corner, same for me in my WS.
Cheers.

Hi Greg,
You ahve every reason to be pleased with this photo, as it is very accomplished in every detail, something remarkable considering that it shows a white building bathed by the sun and the difficulty of putting the perspective right in these kind of architecture shots. The angle of the sun is perfect for making the surface of the walls stand out. I couldn't think of a better POV; although I agree with you that it looks a bit awkward, that is nearly unavoidable in these situations and like you say, the central vertical axis is perfectly straight.
Very good job indeed!

belle photo, bonne netteté, belle vue plaisante a visionner.

Amitiés Thomas
Je reviens.

Good morning Greg!
Very well taken and composed scenery with the historical church. Good sharp architectural details of the church, nice light and framing by branches of the tree. Thanks for posting

Hi Greg,
Wonderful capture of this beautiful New England wooden cathedral. You managed the afternoon light effectively not losing any of the white details. The blue sky contrast beautifully with the crisp white church. There is a westwerd trail of such churches as the pilgrms moved to the Finger Lakes and the to Ohio and beyond.
Regards, Tom

Really a nice POV that gives such an imposing view of this lovely church. The details of the walls are incredibly defined in spite of them being white: really a good exposition.
You are doing a pretty nice service to Massachusets.
Cheerio,
Donato
