Photographer’s Note

I haven't posted tilt in a while, time to correct that. also time to take a little break from Chile photos. so here's a scene from Boston with statue of John Copley in the foreground and the John Hancock Tower rising in the background. no grand landscape, no striking portrait, just little details that I like. and the blue sky, of course.

for information: John Singleton Copley (1738 - 1815) was an American painter, famous for his portrait paintings of important figures in colonial New England, depicting in particular middle-class subjects. in line with current focus on real estate market, a piece of information on John Copley - he once owned a house on Beacon Hill, the most beautiful area in Boston, but sold it without knowing that the Massachusetts State House would be buill very near to the area, which would make his house much, much more valuable. after the contract was signed he learned that the purchasers knew of a project, and tried to to annul the arrangement. he did not succeed, and mourned the loss of the property for the rest of his life.

the John Hancock Tower, is a 60-story, 241m (790-foot) tallest skyscraper in Boston, designed by I.M. Pei and Henry N. Cobb, and was completed in 1976. the Tower is an example of real estate crisis in the US - in 2006, it was acquired for $1.3 billion. by 2009, the owners had defaulted on the loans they used to buy the building, and it fell into foreclosure. on March 30, 2009, Hancock Place was sold at auction for $660.

Ah there you are....LOL...no rain at all...lucky Kristine ;-)
Deep blue sky, what a miracle, after your thoughts abour rain all day, this looks pretty damn good in the sky. But also your photo it self, the strong tilt, the low angle, it really works here, pity about the trees without any leaves....

Hello Kristine! I hope your feet are well and that you were wearing your hiking boots ;))) Great one held in blue and for me it works perfect WITHOUT leaves, it would be too much "with" and would cover some of the building as these trees growwwwwww with the season but also it would loose the cool and stylish approach ... too much nature ... LOL. Just my petit opinion. Very good one, I like it. I really liked Boston a lot although we were in a rush :))) driving up to Vermont. Always the same, even on vacation. Have a wonderful day, as blue as in your photo here in Zurigo ... Barbara.

Hi, Kristine -

The tilt is back!

Great composition, nice mix of old and new, and it creates an uplifting feel. Complex light and shadow handle well, too.

I miss the leaves; Boston must be having a late spring. But Barbara is right: Without the leaves, it creates a much more striking portrait (!) - the minimalist effect at work.

Hello Kristine, I like the tilted angle of this shot;I think that it is probably more effective shown this way.
The light picks out some of the details of John Copley very well.
The blue sky is the perfect backdrop.

I love Boston!! Very European for an American city, isn't it? We were there last August and very impressed. I still have a lot of photos that I want to go through from here. (Too busy...)
But your photo is very different than what I have and simply beautiful. Really unique and very artistic pov. Great sky, great angle! Nice work!

Creative and interesting framing on this scene. It's important i think to frame a statue creatively so it puts a individualistic mark on it. Nice inclusion of the tower, too.

Yah..a relief..soothes the eye..your "smooth" helps "soothe" the eye..youve done it again..10-20 never seen that one before..you should be using it in landscapes too !

the branches are in fact holding the compo together..most would have called it "distraction"

Smooth...peculiar word but a great song ;)

Hi, Kristine. A good tilt with the statue well placed right in the corner of the image and the skyscraper rising parallel to it. The trees on both sides frame the main subjects well. Everything stands out against the nice blue sky.

Very creative title and off course so it the photograph, very creative POV looking from a very low angle, the inclusion of the statue give more essence of the place and its local flavor. Good composition, beautiful blue sky so rich and deep and the POV really accentuate the height of the architecture. Great shot. I love it. Thanks.

Not a lot of color variety in this, but the statue helps to add some variety. But the tilt is great. I haven't experimented with tilt as much as I would like, so I'll give it a shot. Great job here, really like it.

I like the vantage point you've chosen to present this view, in a nice little interlude from the Chile photos! John Singleton Copley was an iconic painter in early United States history. I had no idea that this statue existed, and indeed in the shadow of the Hancock Tower. I do remember when this building was built in the 1970's. I was attending a conference not far from the building, when windows started to come crashing down on the pavement. More than a block was closed off on each side of the building. The housings holding the windows had all been below code, and thousands of them had to be replaced.

Wonderful contrast between the 18th century artist's bronze and the and the high rise with lots of glass to catch the reflection of the vivid blue sky.
The tilt works very well against this beautiful sky.

That's a pretty interesting and truly attractive picture!
The lowest pov was a very good choice! The composition was smartly done, as you placed so perfectly the statue (in classical style), the leafless trees and the post-modern skyscraper! All of them with the bluest sky up above!

This juxtaposition between the statue, the tower and the winter trees is really fantastic.
The light on the statue is beautiful (I am happy to discover John Copley!)
