A brief break from my Puerto Rico photos...
It's been a harsh and difficult winter in New England, but there are signs that the seasons are finally turning. This shot is from Horn Pond in Woburn, MA. During the first really nice day of the year, but after a long stretch of below freezing temperatures, the pond was covered with people skating, ice fishing, and playing hockey. Here, two ice fisherman enjoy the weather while getting in their last chance at making a catch before the ice vanishes.
The shot is a bit misleading, as the ice is actually quite thick after a long cold winter; the water you see is actually puddles formed by melted snowfall on top of a bed of ice. These two still had to use a pretty heavy duty drill to make their hole, so the ice remains thick enough to support them.

This ice looks like it could be vanishing right under their feet. It doesn't look at all reliable. As long as things were okay they gave you a good photo opportunity. But i wish they would have dressed more brightly. The dangerous ice has created a nice pattern of dark and white areas.

Thanks for your post of your reptilian friend! I cannot find how to comment on the actual pic as it only appears as a workshop, but class shot! Elegant and beautiful are not words Id normally use for giant maneating monsters, but you sure found his inner beauty in that! Thanks
This is a good shot too, but like Gert says above, the ice looks quite precarious. I know I would not be sitting there. All the guy in the chair is missing is a big screen TV with that relaxed pose! I see you mention its a trick of the eye in mmisleading puddles, it makes an interesting shot. Nice to see spring on the way back, here in Ireland life is returning to the world too, after a warm, but violently stormy winter. Its always nice to see!

Very interesting note and picture!
Good idea to photograph that for the end of the winter season up there! Extreme temperatures everywhere... here, where I live, we're having a very hot and, exceptionally, dry summertime!
Special regards to the composition, chosen pov nad managmenet of light!
TFS - congrats,

Fine ice fishing candid, nothing but ice and hope for spring soon.
We will have 80 degrees tomorrow for the first time this winter, here in Sacramento area of California.
Thanks for sharing,

I like the way these 2 men are making the best of the opportunity provided by nature. I would have been so out of place if left over here just as these men would be facing the long and hot Indian summer. Fine photo depicting the adaptation of the human race with the environment they live in. Nice one, thanks for sharing.

Good thing you pointed out the details in your notes, because this would be quite deceiving otherwise...that does indeed look like some fast melting ice. I think the drill is a good indication though, there's still a long way to go before breaking apart.
What a great compressed view over the lake and these two fisherman enjoying the nicer weather. It sure has been brutal this year...well, in the Northeast anyway, I still can't wrap my mind around the enormous differences from coast to coast. Love that small bit of reflection in the foreground. Well spotted and framed, this is a solid portrayal of daily life in the region. Have a great afternoon. Take care.

funny thing, I've never been Ice Fishing and i've lived in eastern Canada.
I guess its not too high up on my list :)
yeah I was going to mention that the ice looks thin, but as you mention in the note its misleading.
this is truly a Cultural photo, very well suited for TE. I bet if these 2 people were Women they'd be sitting together talking, but 2 men together its not like this haha
Out here on the west coast people are Golfing :)
