Photographer’s Note

View of the Back Harbor in Rockport, about 35 miles northeast of Boston. The harbor section of Rockport is thronged with tourists much of the year, though not on a sub-freezing afternoon in January. Most of the shops are closed, but there's a cafe with some customers (many known to staff on a first-name basis). If many of the rersidents today are suburban commuters, a quiet day in winter is much closer to the Rockport that souvenirs and scenic artwork can only suggest--a place where the center of life really was around the ocean. That could even mean a place on the frozen edge of the water where a couple of students could be having a little fun after school.
