The snows this winder have turned the beautiful landscape into this white wonderland. I have been surprised at the variations between manual and automatic exposures and at the difficulty the auto focus has with the fine detail of theses snow events.
Please feel free to supply negative comments if you see a problem in this shot. I fretted about the vertical orientation but finally decided that the trees are the right index.

sorry Greg, no negative comment here ;) I think this is a superb shot, the red barn adds just the right colour accent to this magic winter scene. the snow covered trees look as delicat as lace, and I like a lot the strog vertical lines of the trees, for me it fits perfectly the light and uplifting feeling this shot creates. excellent shot. and please, keep that snow in Mass until next weekend when I hope to be there :)
with kind regards,

Lovely winter scenery with beautiful snow covering the trees & red barn. I like this composition with barn tuck in that corner within the vegetation, and enough tree tops are included.

I'm not sure there is anything bad about this picture. The barn is well placed in the frame to create an interesting contrast against the snow and trees. I would have to see the vertical format to make a better comparison however the horizontal format is very effective to create a nicer balance of the different elements. Winter is a beautiful season as seen here. Thanks Greg.

That's what we are waiting for here in central Europe. You show us a wonderful scenery nd one nearly can feel cold. The red cabin adds a lot to the shown. I like the beautiful silhouettes of the trees.
Greetings from springlike Germany!

Compliments of the season Greg. If it wasn’t for the red of the barn I would have thought this was BW. I shoot just about everything in both horizontal and vertical, trouble is I need a square monitor to do both formats justice ;-). I think the low barn suits the horizontal format in this shot. Nice capture and thanks for sharing.

Nice capture. The red of the building contrasts well with the snow.

A lovely winter wonderland composition with the red timber barn at the right.

for a long time I had not seen any more of new publication. I do not find anything with saying on your framing. I see may be a lack of contrast and also a prospect which could have been corrected to give to the hut a pace in conformity with the vertical. Beautiful image of winter.
Have a nice day and a good week-end

I'm sorry Greg, no negative comments on this one.
I do apologize for the inconvenience... LOL!
Lovely wintery shot and great management of light. This looks so realistic! You can almost feel the cold and touch the snow. Perfect framing of the barn among those trees, its red really stands out... like a cherry on the cake!
Good job, buddy.
Have a great day,
ps. NO snow so far here in Amsterdam... plenty rain, though!

Just a great one. Terrific tonality..I can feel the chill.

The fresh snow really adds something to the landscape and the naked branches...
Attractive composition, where the only touch of colour is the barn!

Fantastic winter photo. Beautiful snowy landscape.Very nice colours. TFS.

Greg, the only thing I would've done differently with taking the pic would be to have something more in the foreground...and possibly taken from a greater height. For post processing, i got some cool results running this shot through photoshop. I did auto-contrast, Increased saturation a bit to bring out the barn a little more, and then used selective color to increase the level of black in the black....that gave even more contrast between white and black. HOWEVER, I didn't think my results were different enough to post to a workshop (though if you're curious, let me know and I'll post), nor are they reliable since i am at work and using my laptop...I never like laptop monitor for processing. I've mentioned it before in other critiques or postings, but I'll say it again: I wonder what a tilt-shift lens would do to a shot like this. Anyone here have one?
So yeah, to sum up, i don't think this is a shot that is begging for negative comments. There is nothing fundamentally wrong with it.
Thanks for showing,

interesting winter composition, near B&W except the house, indeed interesting :)

Looks like an image right out a fantastic movie. Great dark ambiance and greta inclusion of the red house. I like it a lot.

superbe paysage bien enneigé avec les arbres recouverts et avec la petite maison rouge
gunbud (34066) 2008-01-20 21:10
Where have you been hiding? This is indeed a winter wonderland with the old disused barn adding rich color to this landscape with lovely freshly fallen snow clinging to the trees and shrubs.

Excellent postcard shot. Love the contrast of the white snow with the red barn.
Charo (51210) 2008-01-22 14:28
Estupenda toma con la cabaña casi tapada por los árboles y la nieve y además le da una nota de color a la foto casi en B/N. Excelente encuadre y atmósfera.

Now that I'm kicking back in a hot climate these pictures are even more impressive. Hard to believe its so cold at home right now. An excellent capture of the season Greg. TFS
holmertz (37209) 2008-01-26 5:29
It's tempting to imagine that the redness of the barn is just the result of some clever PP, but I'm pretty sure this is for real. I like your composition very much, because the trees are quite fantastic in their richly nuanced greyness, and the barn in the corner is just enough offside to create some excitement to the composition.

despite the cold scene, there is an element of warmth emanating from the frame, perhaps it's the red house, as it emanates a feeling of pleasure looking at it. I like the way the dark and the brown tones blend here with the white. There is a stillness captured that is almost palpable.

New snow on the ground and especially on the trees and houses gives a new and magical dimension to nature.
First, and this is personnal, question of taste. You compose too large, I will have zoom in or got closer to the house, taking the shot in such a way as to give the impression of intimity.
Second is the way snow trick the camera sensor, closing down, so you need to add a positive corection, to let more light in and get a whiter snow, even on a cloudy day like this.Do you understand what I mean by corection?
Have a good day

Hello Greg, very nice winter landscape! Good composition and contrast.

Wonderful painting with the help of nature! I have no comment for this exposure. I think that this is very good.
I thank you for this one Greg.

I think this is my favorite of all your winter shots. Apart from the technical aspects such as the perfect exposure framing, there is something else about it that is hard to put a finger on. Maybe a childhood memory of winter upon waking up and looking out the window is called upon that totally grabs the imagination, with lacy cover of snow on trees and shrubs, the soft quietness, and the red barn peeking. Thank you for this beautiful image.
