The New England Peace Pagoda in Massachusetts, Leverett, is the first Nipponzan-Myōhōji Peace Pagoda to be built in the US and was completed in 1986. There are around 80 Peace Pagodas around the world in Europe, Asia, and the United States, and most (though not all) have been built under the guidance of Nichidatsu Fujii (1885-1985), a Buddhist monk from Japan and founder of the Nipponzan-Myōhōji Buddhist Order. Fuji was greatly inspired by his meeting with Mahatma Gandhi in 1931 and decided to devote his life to promoting non-violence. In 1947, he began constructing Peace Pagodas as shrines to World peace. The first Peace Pagodas were built as a symbol of peace in the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Very clean photograph. Whites are white, blues are blue, greens are green. Very symmetrical, even the trees seem to be the same from side to side. Very well composed.

a neat postcard, goodwill pic.

Hi Kristine
The symmetric aspect is the most powerful element of this composition. I like the perfect colors.
A great note too.
Cheers
JP

i agree with the others here, the power of this composition is in it's symmetry: fits the subject really well in this case. i like the color management too. a nicely done postcard material :)

my compliments,
k.

p.s. i'm not gonna comment on that "touristy" figure sitting on the stairs ;)

Hello Kristine,
The beautiful white Pagoda is seen in all its wonderful intricate details as it contrast strikingly with the vibrant blue summer sky. The golden top compliments the rich blue sky. There is a Peace Pagoda in Grafton NY not far from this site. I posted a picture a while ago but it is not any where as nice as this image.
Regards, Tom

I went to school at UMASS Amherst and stumbled upon this place back in 1987 and was quite impressed with it. To the right was a building that had burnt down, I believe it was the first living quarters on the site but not sure. I hope you have also gone to the Guru Ramdash Ashram nearby? If not, I highly recommend it. Nice walk to a water fall and if u r feeling up to it, a walk to the rangers station! Great photo...awesome sky!

Hi Kristine,
the perfect symmetry is something of truly remarkable in your shot. The central compo works very well with the Pagoda so well standing against the blue sky. Great choice the inclusion of the guy to give a perfect scale to the whole lot. Good job.
Thanks for sharing it.
Regards,

Igor
