Dunster House, a photo from Massachusetts, Northeast

Photographer's Note

Cambridge, Massachusetts is perhaps best known for the presence of Harvard University. Harvard is the oldest institution of higher learning in the United States, having been founded only a few years after the city of Boston in 1636. Since that time it has always ranked as the country's most prestigious school.

The building shown here is Dunster House. Built in 1930 in the same neo-Georgian style as the rest of Harvard, it is one of the school's most prominent buildings, easily viewable from the Charles River which runs next to it. This shot was taken from the banks of the Charles, just over the John Weeks footbridge connecting Cambridge to Boston.

I love the contrast of the red dome against the blue sky, looks excellent. Also, it looks vaguely Russian in design, a beautiful peak for that fine building. The symbol on the gable end of the building is very interesting, and adds a lot of character to the place. Really like your composition.

Hello Andrew,

In this spectacular shot of Dunster House, I see the unmistakable decoration. When I was in the fifth form (11th grade) at St. Andrew's School in Delaware, the site of the 1989 film, Dead Poets Society, I came up to visit Harvard. A alumnus from St. Andrew's put me up in Dunster House.

You might know that the dorms, "houses," are named after past Harvard Presidents — Elliot, Dunster, Lowell... but there is no dorm honoring President Hoar (inaugurated in 1672).
